I haven’t shot my .45 muzzleloader in about 18-20 years when I was in my teens and tags were obviously easier to get with over 100,000 issued. I’m curious if there’s any feedback from active or past muzzleloader enthusiasts as to what powder or sabots/bullets you might recommend. I have a CVA optima magnum and just replaced the barrel on it because at the time in my teenage years didn’t know how to clean it properly after shooting 150gr pyrodex loads through it. Have been looking into the buckhorn 209 for this go—arounds. Help/tips/advice much appreciated, as well as cleaning help. Thanks!

I have no experience with .45 cal, but I have had Great results in my .50 cal CVA(Winchester Apex) using Hornady low drag sabots and 2 Triple Seven pellets. The gun shoots sub moa @ 100 yards consistently if I do my part. I have no experience with the Buckhorn209, but I do hear it shoots really well.

I've enjoyed the benefits of Blackhorn-209.

It's expensive and WAS hard to get - but now Scheels seems to have it in stock all the time.

I can't recall bullet/load I am using but mine was based on whatever the vast majority of people were espousing on https://www.modernmuzzleloader.com/

Clean a BH-209 weapon like you would any other modern powder (no water/soap/drying hassles) and relax - that's why I chose it.

Also - make sure you research and pay attention to the ignition issue with BH-209.

It's recommended to use a specific Blackhorn 209 breech plug.

AI says....

Yes, you can use Blackhorn 209 powder in a CVA Optima Magnum muzzleloader, but it's recommended to use a specific Blackhorn 209 breech plug. The standard breech plug may cause inconsistent ignition with this powder.

Why a specific breech plug is recommended:
  • Consistent Ignition:
The Blackhorn 209 breech plug has a deeper flash hole designed to ensure reliable ignition of the powder.

  • Reduced Fouling:
The deeper flash hole helps prevent fouling issues that can occur with loose powder when using the standard breech plug.
Choosing the right primer:

I have a 50 cal Knight Disk system and I use 2 50 grain triple 7 and 195 grain powerbelt' Could use 150 grains powder because it is a Magnum but keep it at 100 and it saves on the shoulder and will still kill them dead. Longest kill was 185 yards, hit the spine and down he went. I also have a one power scope that took for ever to get used too. LB

Thanks to everyone for the feedback! I’m going to try the blackhorn with 100grains and a magnum primer. It makes sense now but hopefully my breech plug works out. Will post results

I use barnes 45 cal solid copper pistol bullets in my muzzleloader with smokeless powder, they do a number on deer. Ive never used them during muzzleloader season, but I have for filling doe tags during the regular season.

Keep in mind that what you won't know is will it work out at 10 degrees - rather than 75. : )

Bingo . . . clean , clean, and clean again, or the frost/cold weather will bite ya. Taking a gun from warm to cold and back to warm vehicle etc., can do some strange things.

I've been watching some stuff on YT about Minie balls. Deadly, accurate with sb or rifled.

Not from ml but an example:
