If they give Darnold the money he is going to want ( 40 mil or more ) they will be back in the same boat they were with Cousins, unable to pay for quality players to fill in the OF line and defense. They do have McCarthy under contract for the next 3 yrs with 1 yr option, I believe around 4-6 mil/yr. Fill in the Team around McCarthy and the Vikings could be contenders for at least the next 3/4 yrs.

Thats the way im looking at it. Unless they get Darnold to take a team friendly deal. I would rather have JJ qb on the cheap and use that cap space to build around him

They will have approx 76 mil in cap space and i do believe he may take a discount (25-30/yr) to stay with the franchise that turned his career around and who's making him the 3rd overall pick he was supposed to be. Dudes got the arm, the size, the ability to scramble, the whole package..(Needs to learn when not to force it and throw it away more I must say)..

Now if the vikes decide to do him a little dirty and franchise him he's going to get 40 mil for a year and possibly trade bait mid-season next year.. He hasn't proven enough to be a 40 million dollar qb in 1 single year, but rich men like to gamble, cough cough Cousins.. Arthur blank was off his rocker signing cousins to that deal at his age and coming off an Achilles tear..I said all along I'd never miss him whatsoever.. Decent is his middle name at best, not consistent..

In the end, This whole situation with SD largely depends on how the playoffs go..

If Darnold wants a superbowl ring more then money he would be smart taking lower pay. If he chases the money its possible buy doubtfull he will get a ring.

I thought I heard that if they "franchise" him, they'd have to give him $43 mil a year, but IDK if they do that how many years they are locked into? I'd say Franchise him one year or 2 and go for broke with him next year. JJ had a 2nd knee surgery on that knee BTW. He hasn't played a down in the NFL so I think they could afford Darnold if they Franchise him.

U can only franchise a player one year at a time. Typically the players unions in all sports and said player involved get pretty salty about the whole concept these days but at this point, I don't think darnold has a case to be a salty about nor does he seem like that type of guy/prima Donna imho.
We shall see and theres a lot of difficult season left, all it takes is one injury or one heartbreak as we know all too well.

JJ will recover and if not prepare for a QB in 3 years atleast half the cost and dont let sean peyton bamboozel you again! . Use the money to prepare for qb on year 3-4. Until you know you have a mahomes or Allen dont spend the money....and Darnold is no mahomes are allen. Gl
