Does Phelps have enough gold to avoid his doomed sausage server pigeonhole?

Russian wrestler gets choked unconscious, still wins his match

Roman Vlasov certainly didn’t look like a wrestler on his way to a second gold medal when he was flat on his back, slowly regaining consciousness. But the Russian shook off the cobwebs and finished his victory in the semifinal to earn a spot in the final where he defended his gold.

Vlasov, 25, won the 74-kilogram gold medal in Greco-Roman in the 2012 London Olympics, and snagged the title again in Rio, although the road to victory didn’t come without controversy.

In earlier competition, Vlasov appeared to blow a 6-3 lead to Kim Hyeon-Woo, but judges ruled the South Korean’s move was worth two points rather than four. A challenge of the ruling didn’t go Hyeon-Woo’s way and Vlasov advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-5 victory.

The front headlock with an arm I think is much more effective than without the arm.

Correct Dirty, I was making a observation about those (mma) who like the guillotine choke hold, I think it would be much harder to get out if you had the arm.

http://www.cnn.com/2016/08/12/politics/kim-rhode-rio-olympics-gun-rights-second-amendment/

On Friday afternoon, American shooter Kim Rhode held her bronze. It was her sixth medal won across six Olympics on four continents, and she could feel the tears stinging her eyes. In front of her fluttered the US flag, confirmation she is now the first woman to win medals in six straight summer Olympics - her first was a gold back in 1996. Behind her fluttered an Olympic flag at half-mast to honor a Brazilian soldier killed in another spate of Rio gun violence. And those two worlds are forever complicating one of the US’s most-accomplished athletes.

She is a star shooter and a devoted gun advocate. These facets have become an inseparable part of her identity. Once, her medal celebrations were about her performance on the mat. But in a post-Newtown, post-Aurora America, her Olympics are about the gun she fears is being pulled from her hand

US Olympic Gold Medal shooter Kim Rhode is wading into the gun control debate and defended the Second Amendment ahead of her competition in Brazil.

"We should have the right to keep and bear arms, to protect ourselves and our family," the skeet shooter said in an interview Wednesday with Time Magazine in Rio de Janeiro. "The Second Amendment was put in there not just so we can go shoot skeet or go shoot trap. It was put in so we could defend our First Amendment, the freedom of speech, and also to defend ourselves against our own government."

JB wrestles Friday. Coverage on NBC Olympic site. Session starts at 8:00 am. I'm guessing they'll have his matches on TV for sure, probably not live though. You can relay the session also, that's how I've been watching boxing.

The Russian caught a huge break in his first match, that was 4 all day. Makes it looked fixed when replay didn't even reverse it. Time was out of first period when he was choked out, that was actually the right call.

Dirty Mike not trying to derail this thread but how many times can a kid (ND Jr High ) put a potentialy dangerous move on the other kid before the ref steps in and gives him a warning? This year at the Jr high state my sons opponant was on top and my son would stand up and just before he would get away the kid would lift his legs off the ground and create a potentialy dangerous move and the ref would stop the match and put my son back on the bottom. This kid did this 4 or 5 times in a row and when my son complained about this to the ref the ref told him "your job is to wrestle and mine is to make the calls". I never wrestled myself so am not familiar with the rules but I would have thought the kid should have gotten a warning for stalling. This seemed like an intentional way to stall and prevent giving a point for the escape.

Definitely is a case by case basis on a lot of calls like that. He would have gotten a stalling call from me around the third time. After the second time he would have got a head up on that being stalling if he did it again. Stalling sucks to call because there is no true definition or amount of time you're supposed to wait. Since I was pretty good at stalling without making it look like stalling, I'm kind of a stickler about it.

Irish boxer robbed against Russian, tweets Vladimir Putin: 'How much they charge you

There have been far worse robberies in Olympic boxing over the years than what Irish bantamweight Michael Conlan experienced on Tuesday in his quarterfinal loss to Russia’s Vladimir Nikitin.
Roy Jones Jr. and Floyd Mayweather Jr., two of the sport’s legends, each were denied gold medals by dubious calls from clueless judges.
Nobody, however, had a better reaction than Conlan, a 24-year-old who was born in Belfast.
In the ring after Nikitin’s decision was read to the crowd, Conlan raised his arms up in a double middle finger salute to let the judges know what he thought of them.
Then, he went on television and, in a rant filled with curses, accused the International Boxing Association (AIBA) of corruption and said he was through competing in its events.
But the coup de grace came when the 2012 Olympic bronze medalist sent a tweet to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“How much did they charge you bro??” an irate Conlan tweeted directly to Putin

Nikitin will face American Shakur Stevenson in the semifinals, but Stevenson said he thought Conlan won the fight.

So did U.S. coach Billy Walsh and associate coach Kay Koroma. Walsh was extremely unhappy about a Monday decision that went against U.S. lightweight Mikaela Mayer in her quarterfinal bout with Russia’s Anastasia Beliakova.

All of those verdicts – Beliakova over Mayer; Tischenko over Levit and Nikitin over Conlan – favored Russian boxers.

Incompetence? Corruption? Whenever things continually favor the Russians, eyebrows will be raised.

And Conlan raised more than a few eyebrows with his gold-medal worthy rant on Tuesday.
Looks like the Russians are getting to some help!!!

UPDATE:AIBA removes boxing judges from remainder of Olympics

RIO DE JANEIRO — The International Boxing Association (AIBA), the federation that runs amateur boxing, released a statement Wednesday in which it said some judges have been removed from the remainder of the Olympics because their scoring wasn’t up to standards.
On Monday, Evgeny Tishchenko of Russia won the heavyweight gold medal by a unanimous decision, with judges scoring the fight with Kazakhstan’s Vassiliy Levit 29-28 on all cards.
That was probably the worst score of the tournament. Judges in that bout were Michael Gallagher, Armando Carbonell Alvarado and Kheira Sidi Yakoub.

There were two controversial bouts on Tuesday. American light welterweight Gary Russell lost to Uzbekistan’s Fazliddin Gaibnararov, though Gaibnararov ran the last two rounds and was warned numerous times for failing to engage.

Gaibnararov won a split decision. Judges Roland Juhasz and Kestutis Bagdanavicius favored Gaibnararov 29-28, while Enrico Licini had it 29-28 for Russell.

And in an outcome that caused Irish bantamweight Michael Conlan to angrily tweet at Russian president Vladimir Putin, judges awarded Vladimir Nikitin a 29-28 unanimous decision win.

Conlan gave double middle fingers to the judges in the ring and then accused Putin of a bribe later via Twitter.

Judges in the Conlan-Nikitin fight were Jones Kennedy Silva do Rosario, Udeni Talik Bandara Kiridena and Mariusz Gorny.

Though there were numerous allegations of corruption, AIBA’s statement said it backed its officials but would review credible evidence.

“With regard to corruption, we would like to strongly restate that unless tangible proof is put forward, not rumors, we will continue to use any means, including legal or disciplinary actions, to protect our sport and its R&J community, whose integrity is constantly put into question,” the statement said. “The organization will not be deterred by subjective judgments made by discontented parties. We welcome all parties to come forward and provide evidence in order to take appropriate and immediate action.”

There were other fights in which there was outrage over the scoring, particularly in reigning gold medalist Katie Taylor’s loss Monday to Mira Potkonen, but none of them rose to the level of Tishchenko-Levit, Russell-Gaibnararov or Conlan-Nikitin.

Man these Olympics have to be the worst games of all time

Anyone else notice that when watching the olympics, they dont even show the scores on the screen anymore, like the list of top 6 or 10 or whatever, as events progress. Kinda irritates me and makes it hard to know how things are going in the events. Suppose they dont wanna hurt any feelers.
