If you don’t mind me asking, how did she get rid of the cash? Gambling would be the one hard to detect.

she just didn't budget, the more I made, the more she spent. Every time there was a bit of a slowdown I would tell her to pull back on the reins. Her lack of respect for me, for money, and for what it takes to earn a living is glaring. Spoiled only child that went from daddy paying the bills to me paying them. Shame on me. I went over everything with a fine tooth comb and she basically just kept living an unsustainable life style.

Easy to say, but nearly impossible to do.

I've thought and thought and thought, about how things "should be", and the simple truth is, there is no simple truth. Things have become so convoluted, and every single group feels entitled to acceptance and subsidization. The old saying "the squeaky wheel gets the grease" has never been more true. Democracy, as in "majority rules" is all but unheard of any longer. I'm not saying we should all just give up, but it's going to take solutions from people a LOT smarter than me, in order to straighten this mess out.

I'm ALSO not saying that it's hard to find people smarter than me...

And this's all assuming we're on the same page. Throw in nut-jobs who want to tear our government or country apart, and it's even worse.
it's easy to do if you have the common sense to do it. example: not many voted to eliminate property taxes. that was the first step in the process

I'm with you Eyexer. I voted to eliminate them.

Ahab said it right too. Mortgage debt, at the currently-quite-low rates, are a sustainable debt. Plus, your house generally appreciates. Mortgage is the only debt that my wife and I have currently. Have four decent vehicles (have never owned a new vehicle in my life) and they're all paid for.

I DO need a boat though. Needneedneed..

i like your sustainable sentiment, that’s a good way to put it. And it’s why I have in and only have mortgage debt. It’s definitely not a “good” debt. I live my life like I could lose my job any day and so I could quit my job any day. Debt steals my piece of mind and freedom.

The tax write off argument is almost out the window with the new standard deductions. I saw a stat that less than 10% of filers itemized their taxes last year. And it takes a $700,000 mortgage to reach the standard deduction if that’s all you’re itemizing......

As far as keeping money separate in marriage, pre-nubs, etc; why did you even married? The way I remember it, the priest said “and now you are one” at the end of our vows not “and now you are a joint venture.”

I am real close to paying off my modest home. It may not be much but it will be all mine shortly.

One thing I might add is that I would be very very cautious about getting married later in life - unless she has hunting land.
