Got to test my plumbing and drywall removal skills last night. Outside spigot was leaking and creating a nice ice luge outside. Called in the old man with his superior skills. Since I can measure so well, I had to make the opening bigger than the access panel I purchased. Can’t find one that’ll work I figure I’d just build my own with some trim and some plywood. Wife said she wanted a piece of sheet rock instead of plywood. Who am I to deny her I guess. So, anyone in Bismarck with a piece of sheet rock collecting dust, let me know. 14”x14” will work just fine.

Pictures for your amusement.

Ill fix the spigot when it’s not so friggen cold outside. Shut off valve will need to work for now.

Looks like 3/4" but I need probably 1/4" to fit under a 2x4. The lesson learned is, don't buy a house with a sheet-rocked ceiling and replace the leaky spigot when it's still warm out.

Seen quite a few outside spigots start leaking when people leave a garden hose attached and it has a spraying end on it that is closed. That leaves the hose full of water so the spigot couldn't drain out and it froze when it got cold outside. Also try to have a downward slope on the spigot towards the outside when mounting them.
Guessing if it is on the lid (ceiling) you should have 5/8'' sheetrock.

sounds like you've been driving by my house. With a shot off now installed, I'm just going to close them each winter. Still deciding weather I tackle the back yard one. That one looks to be a bit newer at least.

Hey Dirty - I might have a piece of sheetrock that would work. I just got rid of a bunch of scrap but still have some larger pieces.

Do you need 1/2 or 5/8 - guessing 5/8 if it's ceiling.

I'll double check when I get home tonight but I should have something at home that would work.

If it's not 3/4 its probably 5/8's. I can always go smaller as there's a 2x4 on the edge of the hole that it will need to fit under. I'm thinking of when I need to remove it so I want a little wiggle room.

color me ignorant, I thought spigots were designed to not have problems with freezing. Is it only spigot that have drip?

Some time after 1971 was when they figured out the anti-freeze spigot. this one was soldered in and needed to be replaced anyway. I just never got around to doing it. I'll finish the job in the spring.

For those of you that fix these on your own, like the video above, don't forget to lube up the caskets and O rings with plumbers grease before you put it back together. Saves you a headache because the gaskets and O rings tore when it was put back together.
