if they charged double for junk mail than they do regular mail they could reduce their workload by 80%

When I asked why no one wants to apply.......mostly because persons are required to work saturdays Or any other day. Nobody wants to work for a living anymore

rural dvl we are only getting our mail 2 days a week due to carrier shortages, no need for 6 day a week mail and charge rural po boxes for the service.

The idea of a postal service delivering everywhere is to allow every citizen communication and delivery services and to save costs as a country. The cost to us citizens as a whole is way higher if each person has to drive to town or somewhere to get their mail than it is to have one person deliver to an entire area. So even if it loses some that we have to supplement, it’s still cheaper than the other option.

I have a friend who has been a mail carrier for a good many years. Looking to pull the plug this year. He has told me that his over time is astronomical as they are so short staffed. While the extra dollars in his checkbook is fantastic, the lack of time off is influencing his decision to retire. When I asked why no one wants to apply.......mostly because persons are required to work saturdays.
When I was young and fresh out of high-school in 1977. USPS, Bell telephone, State Highway dept and RR were the best paying jobs in the town of Harvey. My guess now USPS, State highway dept and RR would be easy to gets jobs now. As everyone is looking for workers.

For rural carriers 3 days a week wouldn't be bad and I'd be ok with that, but for the city carriers it probably wouldn't work so well. City carriers really get a workout the day after a holiday because of the volume of mail and anything over 8 hours is overtime @ double pay. Like someone already mentioned, AI robots are the answer to city carriers.

Most can't pass a piss test and comply with the random drug testing.
Had numerous applications that came to me for the RR, no shows when heard drug testing.

It depends what you’re testing for. You will find if you cut out THC your interviews will more than double.

If you want to see what privatization for package delivery has done, send something with SpeeDee Delivery. Very fast, safe, economical shipping. Sadly it is only in a limited amount of states at this time. A privately owned business started originally by a young man and his pickup and grew it from there.
I use Speedy for all my business doings very good and cheap

When I retired from Caterpillar, they had quit doing drug screening for pre employment and no random drug test. The only time they do drug test is if there is a bad near miss. Wait there no longer near misses, there called oops. Yes oops

Don’t even get me started on the hiring and even the firing process. It’s the worst part of my job. I absolutely hate it!

This probably made great sense 100 years ago, but I bet the business model has changed since then, and yet the business has remained basically the same. No reason not to reevaluate the current requirements and see if there isn't a better solution to satisfy them.

And probably find better workers too. I didn't drug test when I was hiring but had a surprise when I hired a guy away from labor ready. Labor ready was only paying him like 7 bucks an hour and he was worth more so I offered him a full time work until the project was completed. He fessed right up and told me, you will find out when you do a background check I got busted for 1/4 ounce of weed. He turned out to be one of the most loyal and hardest workers I ever hired. He bar tended at night till close up and was always ready and waiting for me when I picked him up at his house. Guys like that were hard to find.
