Two years ago a small beaver pond just North of me turned absolutely blood red right before freeze up and froze with red ice, It puzzled me what the heck would cause that and at the time the only explanation I could come up with was someone had either shot a bunch of beaver or a deer or something but it was so red that I thought it was impossible . Anyway, fast foreword to last fall and I saw the exact same thing on a different pond right after freeze up. I have no idea what could case this but since I saw it twice I'm sure someone else has saw this too. What the heck could cause this ?

Some sort of cold-water algae bloom? Or on the other end, results of vegetative die-off from a cold-snap? No clue. I'm not a real aquatic science professional...just the armchair variety.

Crazy thing is that it has never happened ever before that I have noticed and then it happened twice. Thinking back, the first time I saw it was 3 years ago then again this year.

Bingo, That explains it. When I first saw it I had read about that and dismissed it because there was only mention about southern states so I did some more digging just now and found this. Also One pond gets an oil slick on the outlet end along a beaver dam, I am still puzzle about that one , I'm pretty sure it's alga too but It seem to come and go during the summer. An old well driller from SD told about an area I think it was near SF where oil/paraffin was at the surface and the old timers would stop there and grease wagon wheels. Kurt or other SD guys have you ever heard of this area ?
