I highly recommend:

Military:
The Jersey Brothers: A Missing Naval Officer... Sally Mott Freeman
Red Platoon: A True Story of American Valor... Clint Romesha
American Soldier... Gen. Tommy Franks
Apprentices of War: Memoir of a Marine Grunt... Gary L. Tornes (local ND Guy during Viet Nam)
Flags of our Fathers... James D. Bradley

Real Life:
The Oregon Trail: A New American Journey... Rinker Buck
The Heart of Everything That Is... Bob Drury (Story of Chief Red Cloud)
Once We Were Brothers... Ronald H. Balson (WWII Holocaust)
Have A Little Faith: A True Story... Mitch Albom

You cannot go wrong with these books. I'd be shocked if you cannot rate the above 4 out of 5, or 5 out of 5 stars.

I just finished the chapter where different elders, who were just boys at the time, described their personal story of what they went through during the battle of Greasy Grass (Little Big Horn). Very interesting! I'm disappointed to hear of any fabrication. But the author was a poet, and Black Elk couldn't speak English. During the forward I knew there would be some poetry added to the translation. But in the book there are footnotes to other books about relating to the events, and they seem to line up chronilogically as far as I know. Where did you hear of any fabrication, as I would like to fact check it and bring it up in class.....do I dare lol. Maybe I have yet to get to those parts.

The Author's daughter transcribed the conversations, and in the forward I read they are still available somewhere. Sure wish they could have recorded them, and let others translate.

" Unfortunately, Neihardt is translating from information that is three times removed from the source. In effect, he is translating Enid’s translation of Ben’s translation of Black Elk’s vision. "

I think this is the biggest problem. I still recommend it, I mean these guys were actually in the Battle of the Little Big Horn.

Yup. “Nicholas Black Elk” is a biography by a dude who researched the original “Black Elk Speaks” and went on to live on the reservation and become a Carholic priest as a result of his study of Nick Black Elk. Basically, Neihardt omitted the fact that Black Elk was a Catechist and devoted his entire adult life to educating natives, helping them to assimilate, and helping them join The Church. Black Elk assimilated and was a Christian Missionary for decades but Neihardt left it out because it didn’t fit the poetic narrative about the stoic Indian. Black Elk has quite the sense of humor too, like a horse named “baloney”
