Many years ago I was driving back from MT to Bismarck and there was some water in the ditch on interstate. It was spring and a pair of ducks took off from one side of the road and I clipped the hen which was flying behind the drake and slightly lower, just with the top corner of my windshield. It spun around a couple times and landed flapping on the interstate behind me, which I could see in my rear view. Drake did a 180 and immediately landed by its partner on the road just before a semi flattened them both. Didnt appear it even attempted to take off as the truck went over them. Kinda crazy, true love I guess.... ;:;badidea

With mallards and the spring breeding season, I'm pretty sure "love" had very little to do with it.

observing two cases of this in our little sample group is proof that banding screws with a duck's ability to fly - stop this midieval practice now

Interestingly enough they've actually had some legitimate problems with this especially with birds with neck collars. They have a nasty habit of icing up during snow storms and if I remember correctly quite a few Birds crashed to the ground in the April blizzard of 97 out in the Red River Valley with a couple pounds of ice around their neck. Talk about a band hunters wet dream to just walk around and pick them up.
