Salamanders don't work. If you happen to catch some, give them to me and I'll dispose of them for you. NO charge.

I have my personal best catfish on salamander in late November on the Sheyenne. I've caught numerous cats and eyes on salamander in the fall - amphibians make the pilgrimage to the water's edge and fish are ready and waiting. I don't think there's a whole lot of thought if they see/smell one in the river, frog - salamander, doesn't matter. Mud puppies, the juvenile version, work best, but I've cut up large salamanders and caught cats.

Again - let me know if you've got salamanders you need to get rid of. I will for free simply for the generosity in my heart.

I will have to try them this weekend then, if my source comes through.

How dose one go about catching salamanders? Last time I seen one up close it crawled into my goose blind at about 3 in the morning. Woke up to sounds and seen it's little eyes looking at me.

Drive around slough country at night when there's a warm rain. Tons of frogs and salamanders to pick off the road.

To bad your out east because like said before on foggy/damp mornings I see hundreds of them and could easily limit out in short order but have never had much use for them my myself. Because of that I would have little qualms about giving them away. With that said it occurs to me I haven't seen all that many of them in the last 3 weeks. It's very common at this time of year where I'm scouting to see dozens and dozens on the road and unfortunately i run over god knows how many! Needless to say my experience with this is completely anecdotal! :;:muahaha

But in all seriousness I messed my back up fairly decently 6 months ago and because of that it allows me to go out often times for a couple hours right at first light most mornings so I tend to see many of the animals moving back and forth. So if anyone around Bismarck Mandan or somewhere in the vicinity who would like a bucket full of frogs or salamanders or possibly even crayfish just let me know. I don't need or want any money for it, it's just something I happen to see on many mornings every week but dont overly use myself so would gladly pick up what i can for anyone of you guys if you feel they help you and your fishing.

On question for the salamander fidhing guys. how do you keep the damn things from twisting themselves into a ball like they tend to do when aggravated?

And haveing now put all of one third of a thought together into why I'm not seeing near the numbers of salamanders as most mornings im used to it occurred to me that maybe possibly it might have had something to do with the drouhgt the last 6 weeks.! :;:imwithstupid.

And for enslow
Invariably my lack of forward observation inevitably leads me into tripping over the intangibles that so often arise in even the simplest equations! For it is in these intangibles of our life that we so often discover our own deep-seated in equities! So in the end we must say to hell with all the intangibles and inequalities and drive forward with all we have and say that our lives will be what they are no matter what some think we should be! And when the other's question us about our past and if we think we're going in the right direction the only answer we should say is indubitably!

But you know what? that's still in the end is anecdotal so I guess who cares!:;:cheers

I won't use salamanders because of the secretion mentioned above. I like me some water dogs though.

Ive tried sallies and had no luck with them at all. If you wanna catch mudpuppies, use a minnow trap filled with fish guts, Ive gotten up to 20 of them at a time, if they are in a pond, they will go nuts for this. Also fish eggs work really well, freeze them in the spring and use them for bait later in the year. Make sure when your put a trap out, leave at least one corner of it above water, cuz sallies will go in there to eat this stuff also, but if they cant get air, they will drown fairly quick, depending on water temps (dissolved O2 concentrations)....

I have to grudgingly agree with MSA which I actually do a lot concerning fishing. I saw him launch at the tailrace once and told the boy to throw a rock at his aquatic vehicle. Instead of immediate obedience, I got a questioning look which immediately resulted in confiscation of a BUNCH of Twizzlers. I should have also kicked his jerky and Mt Dew into the river. ::: (It pains me to feel I had to add that)

Smelt were not available in the South when I left. I believe there's serious jack (chain pickerel in the deep South) to be obtained. I'd be willing to get into the gig with those possessing logistical potential ...and provide a superior catfish bait. They'd never eat it again (catfish) after a mess from the tailrace...I was mocked for rejecting a bite in a napkin in Alabama. The side dishes were awesome and filling.
