You should do that anyway. There are a few pigs to be had right now on the ND side. I've been telling my friends n relatives for years about why they never go north during March April & May when Bismarck is hot. I just get a lot of excuses and blank stares, like I'm BS'n them.

I was always told that they were good but every story i heard involved cleaning them at 2 am and being drunker than hell. Well i took some home and made them for supper and wow they are better as bait than eating. I made them just like i was told and another guy came over that really liked to eat them. He found out he does not like to eat them sober. I see why every story involved beer.

Haha could be something to that. The ones I have had have been good- both while sober and tipsy. Soak in beer and then into dry mix to coat and fry. Maybe my taste buds are warped.

These smelt, are they the same smelt you can buy frozen in the store. If so can they be used as a frozen bait?

Yes and yes. They can also be used live in the first couple miles of the river below the dam so long as they were caught or netted there at the same time. As for the run I couldn't find any reports yet but that doesn't mean much. Most years this would be a touch early but with this weather who knows. I've more or less lost track on the particulars on their spawning run since they stopped spawning in ND but it was allot of fun when they did and it was sorta nice having them force the fishermen off the water. Always made for a good change of scenery after a couple months on the river.

I would buy frozen smelt if they were available, I like using blue herring for ice tip ups but there hasn't been any for sale for awhile , so my choice is frozen store bought smelt, Creek chubs, or frozen suckers.
