I am pro farmer all the way, but I will say no other business gets the tax break flexibility and government cash like the business of farming. I just want to write off half the crap they do.

My parents gave me life, an education and after that the wife and i were on are own.

We have not receive any government direct assistance (get SS now) even when at first we did qualify for help with food. The wife said no way.
Raised a family and got old. What we have, we have on our own. Inherit some important personal items handed down to us that will be passed to our kids. No dollars.

I understand why, for many, the questioning of helping farmers with our tax dollars when their appearance is seen as such.
Same with that welfare crab that lives by us with the wife working, the guy moves in, does not work but lives off her and our tax dollars.
And do not kid oneself about what help some wealth corporation seem to get.

Food and its production is just to important to mess with. All society is based on the land and its ability to produce. Yes it would be nice sometimes if a farmer also said thank you and would whine less. After generation of providing for a farm program it has become a way of life.
Not sure of the answers but if I am going to feed that crab next to me I guess I can spare some change for the farmer/rancher. db

Did Obama give some power company a half a billion right before they went out of business?
Yes at the same time we do not take the risk of running a business and with that no cash or tax breaks as many small business also do not get. Was stated 1 in 10 small business make it. For them either you make it or do not and no, the government is not going to ensure they make it.
A few years of not making a new car I can live with but not making food for a few years will not work. db

I am all for farmers and ranchers, I still have one relative that ranches.

Pride:
The wife had more pride than I had I guess as she grew up in town and I on the farm and knew of green checks. It was part of life.
But what we have we have. It was with our own monies, paid our fair share of the bills (taxes), did not ask or receive those benefits.
A farmer sometime ago asked why I did not buy a ATV. I told him because I could not write it off and have the government pay for 40% of it.
So for me and her we have a very important asset call PRIDE.
We buy our Old Mill with our cash, it taste much better that way. db

Who the hell is going to pay for these $700,000 combines. The people designing, building, selling and servicing those machines have to eat too.

Speaking of pickups ------ I had a friend who lived on the border of Arrowwood refuge. I would stop in often after a morning hunt and have coffee with him. The kid would be glued to the TV watching Captain Kangaroo. Well the kid grew up, and the old fellow passed on. When we stopped at the farm one day to say hello the kid couldn't even remember who we were. I was driving a new pickup (the first I ever owned) and he kept staring at it. Finally he tells me how hard farming is and he will never have a new pickup. Then he tells us his second job of driving school bus interferes with his family vacation of taking the whole family to Jamaica for two weeks. Well I could never afford that vacation, but I'm happy for him. Then next month we talk to him and he is driving the most decked out GMC Denali that I had ever laid eyes on. Again happy for him, but I could do without the bs of how tough it is for him. One needs to learn not to whine to people when they have much less than them. It's like a millionaire whining to a guy on food stamps. I guess it's human nature for people to think others have it better. Who knows????? In America most of us are rich compared to much of the world. We all need to learn to be appreciative of what we have.

Exactly, and that brings up another good question: When a person is funded/supported/housed/fed/etc. by the government should they be considered a government employee and be treated/tested as such?

I would agree there is a point of "where it's your business". And also a point of "who gives a fuck". Most of this thread falls into the latter.

Edit: To be clear, I have no issues discussing the merits of the soybean relief, or trade wars. Where it gets petty is the constant animosity towards those who have a nicer pickup then you, or a boat, or a 4 wheeler. What are we, fucking 12??

Nobody has a nicer vehicle than a Dodge like mine:

Did I mention, it is a 97, 2500, Cummings, five speed, positive traction, Ram on the hood, 4.10 gears, 84000 miles now, took out of storage last week for its 1000 mile drive for the year and the list goes on. It loves me when I take it out of storage.

I did go to a dealer to buy a new power wagon however they would not even look at my 97, the power wagon was $55000 with no diesel, a 2500 with diesel was $60000, so due to a lack of funds in the account from the last 50 plus years of working, I am considering for $100 I can get chrome power wagon emblems as I already have the 4.10 gears and lock drive or whatever it is call now days for the wheels and then maybe spotlights in the corner of the door and a new, bigger Ram on the hood from the forties. no/yes.

today I will start the process of getting ground ready for my brassicas. Life is indeed great again. db

If you knew how often I actually get out hunting you would not say that. I think I made it out about six days last fall. Physical abilities, family, expense, etc. Not complaining.
As for the new pickup story I hope you didn't think I was whining. It was to demonstrate the whine of another and say that if we stop to think about it we are all very lucky people in this nation. I will not even complain about the three knee surgeries, the shoulder surgery, the current torn rotator cuff, or the torn miscues. I am alive and enjoying life. It's good the farmers are doing well, but we all are and should be thankful for it.
I suppose everything is priorities. I don't know how many days I'll make it out hunting, but I will spend some time in August in seminary.
