Anyone can gamble away their money across the state by participating in the lottery. Compulsive gamblers, like alcoholics, find ways to feed their addiction. Black Jack and pull tabs can also be found just about anywhere but according to current law can only be played while alcohol is served. Siting a casino to provide easy access to a good part of the population would be fairly easy. Put on in Coleharbor and attract the Bismarck/Mandan, Minot, and Lake Sakakawea crowds. A location between Fargo and Grand Forks would also be a great spot to plunk one in. Much better roadway access than Prairie Knights, Newtown, Belcourt, etc. One could be placed just west of Medora and wouldn't detract much from the rustic beauty of the town and current motel and restaurant facilities should be able to handle the additional traffic that extends beyond the musical season. Would imagine the facilities would need to be smoke-free to meet current state law and would not end up being an ashtray like Prairie Knights. North Dakota would be smart to start slow with one or two and see how the revenues support the venture. Was reminded that churches conduct raffles for their carnivals giving away cars and trucks. Seems like gambling is not a sin if you do it for raising revenue for your religious purposes. Gambling gets a bad rap as an addiction. We don't ban alcohol because there are alcoholics. We don't ban cigarettes, cigars, etc. because of addicted smokers. We don't ban all you can eat buffets because some people have eating disorders. I say give the proposal a chance!
