I don’t have a single piece of “higher end” gear that I paid full price for. None.
Same, except for maybe an early season shirt I bought for an unexpected hunt. Otherwise all my good gear/clothing was purchased at a discount.

Had a friend back when we lived in Montana, he came out to be with us as we elk hunted and camped in the West Fork. Told him not to bring an air mattress and that is exactly what he brought. I told him he will freeze on that thing at night and the first night I woke up in the middle of the night and his teeth were chattering. I went out and got some hay that we had for the horses and told him to throw that mattress away and put his sleeping bag on the hay. It was funny but I felt sorry for him freezing on that darn air mattress.

The best thing that I found for a mattress pad for camping was 2-3'' thick foam pool pads for floating on the water. They worked slick and worked really well.

If the clothing item will manage moisture I don't care what name is on the tag. I'm plenty happy w/one "earth-tone" colored dye for my clothing as well. I don't care if it's made for every-day, hunting, fishing, camping, hiking, hockey, football, soccer, volleyball, or golf. If the clothing item can keep my dry by either keeping moisture out, or moving sweat away I'm likely to find it useful.

A critter is more likely to see your movement WAY before they could make out your outline which is when camo MIGHT help. WELL before worrying about their sight however, you gotta manage the situation to stay the hell outta their sniffer. You could have that light-bending camo from the Predator movies and it's not gonna do you a lick of good if your quarry smells you before they're within sight of you.

I avoid cotton like the plague.

Mountaineering clothing can be gotten cheaper using the same materials. It’s where the companies have copied a bunch of the aspects of technical clothing

Merino doesn’t work for me synthetic moves moisture better for my body chemistry. I have a buddy who is the opposite. Merino gets cold and clammy for me.
The merino works better for me as well...The synthetics were ok, but the worst part is I would stick so bad after a day of active hunting. I can wear merino for days and not stink.
