You haven't lost a damn thing.

Unless, or until, you lock in the "loss" by selling. In that case you have the classic Buy High, Sell Low syndrome.

Its called dollar cost averaging/systematic investing. When market is down your monthly contribution is buying more shares. Generally works better than trying to time the market.

One step closer to the end.
If you read/think that there is more carnage on the way, consider investigating into investing in some gold stocks/funds.

Look back at what happened in other bubble bursts and history should replay itself.

Good luck!

I haven't been hit too hard, but most of my stuff are in blue chips. I've lost $3,000 since September, but with dividends and such it will only take a few months to make all of that back. I was ahead $8,000 for the summer and then sold that stuff off in September for more variety and those new purchases are what's down the 3k. I'm waiting for a good 2019.

Buy when it's trending down, buy when it's trending up, buy when it's a bull, buy when it's a bear. Stick with a plan and keep investing small amounts every paycheck and you don't have to worry about "timing" the market, don't even have to watch it, pretty stress free. Check your portfolio every year or so as to how much risk you want to be taking, as you get older, start moving things from the more risky stuff to safe bets. You work too hard to try to time the market to make a quick buck.

I was advised back in April that the market would tank before December. Make some adjustments and ride the bitch. It'll be back even stronger.

Not at all. They are simply buying shares at 2016/2017 prices. I'd like to be able to do that with boats and pickups!

You might get that wish ---- some say start of a recession. Its all cyclical

I essentially started investing right before the recession. Ever since then its been a rocketship ride. A lot of my generation has hardly seen a loss and are freaking out. Ive chosen to ride it out....we'll see in 30 years!

And just when you think the stock market sucks, take a gander at crypto-currencies! That'll help you feel better about the lumps your 401k, etc have taken in stocks as of late.
