I was helping a buddy this weekend and heard a scream! His mother-in-law had just killed a snake. I was about a foot long and brown in color with a bright orange belly. About as thick as a pencil. Looked like a green grass snake but brown. Any ideas?

Yup, Red bellied snake ,We see them up in the hills once in a while. I think They showed up just in the last 40 or 50 years or so because the old timers had never saw them .

[h=3]Food[/h] The redbelly snake eats insects, earthworms, and slugs.

I prolly would have let it live, rather have a cute lil snake around than SLUGS....

I was working in Hoople ND a few years back, and the guy with me was a nancy about snakes, well we came across a few in a farm yard we had stopped at, I picked one up and was chasing towards him with it, he somehow managed his way into the car before I could pitch it at him. For 3 days my hand stunk of the worst smell I had ever come across. We had to head back to town with my hand out the window, and even after several washes that day the stink would not go away.

I eventually ended up buying some perfume based hand lotion to try to mask the stink. twas horrible, and ended my snake handling days

I live NE of Bismarck. We had a small one under a bucket in our garage. We were cleaning up and picked up the bucket... and there he was. I had never seen one before that. Did a little Google search and found out what it was and what they ate. That is one of the few snakes I have let live. I turned him loose in our tree rows (my wife was not impressed).

As far as snakes go... he was kind of cute.

Juanner and all concerned,

I had a similar situation in Cuba. I also got about five sores on my arm for the fun.

My wife would have screamed bloody murder no matter how small it is and ran over it with the zero turn and then mowed over it again several more times just to make sure it was dead. I once saw one of the biggest bull snakes laying on a section line one day and had to stop get out and check it out, the instant I got out she jumped into the drivers seat and took off and left me standing there. Had to walk about 1/4 mile to get to her as she was no going to turn around and come get me knowing there was a snake in the territory.
