So train would be bad to send a 15yo girl on alone? Trying to figure out how to get my daughter from bismarck to great falls and back without breaking the bank or having to drive 2 days...

The train doesn't go to Great Falls, it follows along HWY 2 up north. I Don't have any kids, but I would not put a teenage daughter on that train alone, not worth even the tiny risk.

One of the times i took it, Border Patrol came on the train at one of the stops in MT and took a couple people off.

i used to ride the train alone every summer when i was a kid. Fargo, to Minot. That was 20 years ago though, and as they say - times have a changed.

I think passenger trains are the most archaic form of transportation. Dont do it. The food sucks, beer is expensive and you literally feel like you could jump out and run faster.

Heading out west for a wedding and thinking of taking the Amtrak. Anyone ever done it? Any tips or hints? Time wise is close to the same as driving and so is cost.

I took it from fargo to Portland and absolutely no complaints, train was clean, bathroom was clean, food was good and not terribly expensive. There was no BS happening, drug dog came on at one point for a random check, they kicked two people off for smoking cigarettes on the train, conductors were present often. It was an enjoyable trip, my only beef was they said a 10-12 break so I got off to stretch my legs and went into the station bathroom to get rid of to much coffee and when I came out the train was shut tight. I had to run out and unlock the train door and jump on. Damn near got left in Havre Mt.

I've been East as far as Ann Arbor MI. From here to Chicago was good but from there East it was ugly, I was packed in like sardines with Daily commuters all dressed up in suits and working on their computers . Saw a older guy pick his nose and rub it off on the seat, I almost puked. Once back in Chicago and on the way back home it was good again, Spent all day visiting with 4 Amish guys from western MN, They were fun to visit with. What I liked about it was the relaxation , I had planned to drive but it was just a quick business trip and it was relaxing and refreshing not to be tired from driving the whole trip. If you take the train bring lots to do , I had a laptop and lots of movies ,There are electrical plug ins to keep things charged. The seats were comfortable even with a bad back and it's nice that you can get up and walk around.

I know an old feller that has now passed, saved for a lifetime for a trip to California, I was all he talked about before and after... It made me want to do a trip sometime...

I did hear that you see eastern montana during daylight and the mountains at night, which would blow if it is a dark night
