I have a 2 story great room with a gas fireplace, a ceiling fan to circulate the air and a shoulder mount 3.5' above the gas fireplace. There is no mantle between fireplace and mount. My wife has been running the fireplace consistently because.....surprise surprise, she is always cold. One day, I felt the stone between the mount and fireplace and it was fairly warm along with the bottom chest area of the cape of the mount. I started reading on this and more and more people say it's a bad idea to have a mount above a fireplace. I told the wife she needs to bundle up, adjust the thermostat on the furnace or a combination of both and only run the fireplace only when absolutely necessary. What are your experiences with mounts over a gas fireplace?

I have had this for 2 years now and don't want my mount ruined in short time but I don't want to take the mount down either because it "makes the room."

I think you have two choices either get rid of the wife or get rid of the mount and depending on the size of the rack ( on either one ) that might be a tough decision. good luck

Best case scenario to make you both happy, maybe a mantle with some sort of heat shield built in.

Keep the mount there and replace the existing fireplace with a wood burning model. Women can't start fires on purpose.

I'd move the mount or risk it. It's called the great room for a reason and the elk is not it. To not use a fireplace because your elk might get a sunburn and develop skin cancer seem like a silly reason.

New wife or move the mount. The mantel below the mount is a good idea. Even one made out of wood will disperse the heat.
