We (Sub_Elect, HuffRanger, and Winnipeg Winbauer) had another great trip to Lake Winnipeg in the search of the elusive Greenback. This trip was definitely more difficult due to the fish cooperation and quality of the ice. Regardless of the fish that decided to bite, the trip was something I look forward to all year long. Being able to have a good time with like-minded guys is what it's all about. The fishing is icing on the cake.

So, what we decided to do is fill you guys in on a little trick that more and more people are doing. We want to set a precedence as good sportsmen that respect someone else's body of water. We (North Dakotan's) have been burned by some out of state/town/county "sportsmen" in the past and it's important that we try to set a great example. Keeping these big fish alive so someone else has a chance at them is the top priority.

One easy way to keep these fish alive is to use a boga grip or the plastic lip grabbers. Even though the plastic ones float, sliding your bump board or ice scooper through the loop is a great way to secure it.

Keeping the fish like the one in the picture above, allows you to get settled down, slap some hands and get ready for your photo shoot. Right now, Dakota Tackle has a bucket full of them for $12.

Be careful out there ladies and gentlemen. The ice is rougher than the business end of an artillery range.

I did not expect this thread to be about etiquette. Perhaps it's time to change your handle from "Dirty Mike" to "Thoughtful Michael"

I was actually looking at those the other day, not that I catch fish that warrant needing them often. Thanks the tip DM

If we are discussing ways to keep the fish safe to be released I will mention that when it is super cold out it is best to not take the fish out of the shelter for a pic. eye and gills can be damaged within seconds in those bitter cold temps. If you are going to do it, have the camera man outside and ready before you quickly pop out with the fish for a picture. I hate seeing pics of these once in a lifetime fish on social media with frozen eyes and a caption like "released to be caught again". Reality is that fish is probably not going to make it. good topic dirtymike.

I grab my catch by the eyeballs, scream like a little girl, dance around the group with the fish flopping around in my hands, drop it a couple times, finally I will calm down enough to take a picture, and then I slice the meat out of it and eat it. Its called catch and eat bitches...haha
The big ones taste best with a bit of tartar sauce.

Do you at least clean to poo off before you fillet the pig?

Those grips also work great for holding pike while taking cranks out so you don't catch a treble in the hand.

And, I might add, it is not poor form to hop from shanty to shanty with bucket in hand and ask "you no want feesh? I take for you!!"
