I think I have caught more fish on tip ups than I the house some years especially in shallow water when noise in the house scares them away. Many people don't realize how that loud noise affects fish.

The key for me to get bigger fish on tip ups is to use the biggest Minnow possible. I use mono or flourocarbon leaders 36" or so with plain hooks and a split shot 4" above the hook. Sometimes colored split shot or beads work better than having none. I don't use trebles in case the fish swallow the minnow. I have also caught huge jumbos on these rigs and once again big minnows are a must. I have never seen a need for trebles for walleye. Sometimes jigs work too.

Yep, have caught larger eyes via a tipup. Wish it didnt have to be that way (would rather catch on jigging rod) but sometimes, the tipup is killer.
