My fuel pump died on my 99 RAM (POS only lasted 15 yrs and 220k miles). It is two blocks from where I want to get it fixed.

What are the laws on how to tow it there "gomer style" without hassle from The Man.

Secure the tow straps so they can't come off... and make sure brake lights and signals are working?

Jezz you are a worry wart, is fargo that strict.

If you tow strap it all them 2 blocks, is the man gonna lock you up.
I have made it a long way in life out of playing it stupid, works 99% of the time
"Sorry officer, I am old and confused, this is how we did things back on the farm. Maybe you could give me a police escort since I am a bit slow in the head"...haha

Thnx.

I've done it plenty in my youth - so I am hip to the proper methodology... just didn't know if some screwy nanny law had been passed preventing me from handling dead vehicles on my own.

my problem is that it would piss me off for days if I got hassled

I am with you, I am really not a fan of being bothered when I am in the midst of trying to work on something, I even hate when a boat fishing by me wants to make small talk on every pass.
I am of course a friendly fella, so I talk back, but don't like too..haha. I hate people:;:howdy

Had a buddy that kept buying crap vehicles. Towed him alot. Never had an issue with flashing lights. Did run into the po po when I tried to pull my wife's cousin out of the ditch on the interstate. Apparently the tow truck is the only on allowed to do that.

I just put a fuel pump in my Chevy last weekend. $300 for the damn pump

yeah. I just decided to change it myself and am bracing myself for how much it will cost me.

So I have to tow it home rather than service station. It's right in front of my business on the street. I let employees use it for remodeling, etc.

I need the exercise and banged up knuckles anyway.

I am a moron... just realized we have a forklift sitting right here at work and I can use that to do the "box lift" approach rather than dropping the tank. I was THIS CLOSE to doing it the hard way. ;:;banghead

Your just gonna break shit, and end up spending more cash. Let the local grease monkeys handle it, and spend that saved time fishing, or smoking.

99 Ram...eh, you may want to buy some lube for the box bolts. You start snapping them off and you will for sure be wishing you would have just taken it to a shop.

Can I just cut/weld it back on if I break stuff?

This looks TEMPTING

I unbolted the box and just had a few guys help me lift it back a few feet and rest it on the tire. Box doesn't have to come all the way off. Just don't forget to unhook the electrical for lights. First time doing it pretty easy job

What about dropping the fuel tank? You could cut a hole in the box, but if I did that I know I would be replacing more than just the fuel pump. :;:smokin

I plan on the "box tilt" method. Leave the back two screws half way in and remove the rest. Use forklift to raise front - install jackstands - get it done, tilt it back down.

I have a fiberglass topper so box is a tad on the heavy side.

I'm driving a 2014 RAM now - so this old rust bucket is just a bang-around I'm keeping to loan friends, take dove hunting, yadda.

And I just filled it with premium 4 days ago. ;:;banghead

I helped my uncle replace his pump on his pickup. 4 bolts for the bed and 3 guys lifted it off (or use ratchet straps in you shed/garage) took less than 30 minutes.

you shouldn't need to drain it if you do the box lift. Pump should be right on top of the tank.
