I dont do much trolling except with electric ---- does anybody use bags to slow down the big motor. What size two 24" on the front work -- pull down a black engine from 3mph something to 2.3mph.

I'd say it depends on the motor. Iv'e never had much luck with bags on a big motor mostly because mine would eventually load up with gas at low idle and die. trolling plates arn't the answer either but they worked but loss of boat control. Every motor is different , if you can idle for long periods without loading up they might work good. I finally upgraded to a 9.9 kicker with trollmaster and I've never been so happy, can't hear it run from in the boat. I leave the kicker straight and use the front electric to steer the boat. IMO this is about as good as it gets. Now if someone would come up with a low range gear in an outboard that would be a perfect outfit. The boating/fishing/rigging industry reminds me of big pharma.

I ran a 36” off the bow eye of my old boat to slow down the big motor. You need a harness tied to the side rails to keep it centered though. Without it steering is goofy at best.

I think mine is a 32" and that's what I use on my 1850 Lund with a 150 Optimax. I just clip mine on the back loop, doesn't seem to change steering too much. I steer with my electric though so maybe that helps.
