image.jpgThis stuff is taking over. I know it's a type of grass, maybe even one people intentionally plant but it's blades are broader, it grows faster, and it doesn't get as green. Any idea what it is specifically?

No expert here, but with having a similar issue I would say that is Quackgrass. Not to be confused with crabgrass.

Quackgrass is a perennial and the only way to get rid of it is to use roundup or other nonselective chemical. Pulling, digging or trying other selective herbicides wont get rid of it. You will have to kill off and re-seed.

Crabgrass is an annual and you won't start seeing that until later May. It doesn't germinate until the soil is 55-60F. It can be controlled with pre-emergent and other (expensive) post emergent after it comes up.

Get some Drive XLR8, game over for crab grass. I bought a half gallon for around 60 bucks a few years ago, I have an applicators license and buy enough chemical that my local chem dealer doesn't ask but I'm not sure anymore if it's a restricted use chemical but it will kill that shit right now and not hurt your grass, my yard is a fescue and bluegrass mix and it was fine.

That picture looks like quack and our soil temps aren't there yet for crab so about all you can do is roundup and reseed, it sucks but I haven't found a chem that nails it yet, I tried milestone and tordon and since it's a perennial you don't have a lot of options.

That is quack grass…when we moved into our home my front yard was over grown with it…..I dug out all the spots and replanted the grass…damn stuff beat the replanted seed back up …...had a lawn professional come up and look at yard…..told me it was quack grass and only way to take care of it was with Round Up…..killed entire front yard and replanted….he told me we don't have crab grass in the northern states so all the fertilizers they sell with crab grass control are worthless…...

i agree that is quack grass. but, i am also fairly confident we have crab grass up here. could be wrong. but, i believe i can tell the difference and my yard has an abundance of both. i've got too many acres of stuff i don't mow surrounding the stuff i do mow. so, i gave up hope of controlling it in the stuff i do mow. both are very resilient.

If it's green it good enough for me. There is fishing to be had and can get that done if a guy worries about a few weeds.

I have the same issue. Round up and re plant is an option or pick one of these up. Since that grass grows quicker wait until it is taller than other grass and use this. It takes time, but I think its less work than completely re doing.

I would research ways to give the good grasses the advantage. Mowing times/heights. Soil pH, yadda. Help the good grasses smother it, maybe real short mower cut heights combined with seeding in a good grass that thrives on short cuts, dry vs wet conditions. Blah blah blah.

work with nature basically

Technically quack grass is a southern grass. Realistically it is pretty much everywhere. It's green and it mows so I don't get too worried about it.

So once weed/grass is made legal will the state regulate this? Personally I don't understand the issue with having "weed" in your "grass" but hey who knows any more, guys can use the girls pisser....................:;:

You could roundup selectively like I do with dand-lions, just get a paintbrush and put a little on a few leaves from each plant and itlll kill them, I dont dilute it, use full strength.

My former house had front yard issues, I round up killed the entire lawn, tilled it, leveled it, let it sit for a month, and round up killed everything a second time, tilled again, leveled it, then rented a big heavy roller thing to make the dirt level and smooth by crushing all the dirt chunks into a smooth surface.
I then hired a hydro spray guy and had him spray the lawn on, and within 3 weeks I had a good base and just filled in the thin spots with the same seed he used. Within a month and a half I had a choice yard that was the envy of the neighborhood.
