I've noticed an unusual amount of fish jumping at Devils Lake this summer, At first I thought Bass but I finally saw a couple when they were all the way out of the water and they didn't look like bass, Anyone else seeing jumpers and/or know what they are ?

I caught a good look at one that was close to the boat and it was dark colored and had long body. That was when the question popped in my head , What did I just see ? I had no clue there were suckers in DL till you mentioned it then I googled it and found this little gem.

If they kind of shoot straight up and down it is suckers. I have seen that a lot on the small lakes in se ND. Have had some big carp do the same thing close to the boat, really freaked the dog out.

In 35 years of fishing DL I have only caught 4 species that I can remember. Pike , Walleye, Perch and White bass . I thought that was all that was in there. What else is in there besides those and Suckers ?

State record bullhead. No? Suckers are there. They are practically everywhere in this state. Just are much for biting unless you are some Zen fisherman like ahab obviously. I would bet the jumpers are small pike.

I just caught a sucker in Devils Lake this morning. About 18" to 19" long and fat. Now I wish I could have snapped a picture. About the 3rd time I've caught one. Two weeks ago a buddy with me caught one too.
