Folks. Need some advice from gun aficionados smarter than I. Have a post-64 Winchester Model 70 Classic Sporter in .25-06. Through an absolutely moronic move, I broke the stock. I’m now in the market to replace.

A couple of friends have pointed me to Boyd’s. I’ve perused the website and more than a few stock options exist for the particular rifle. Im pondering a thumb hole stock, but one friend questioned if the barrel would remain “free floating”. Any advice on this issue or other pitfalls of which I should be aware? Any input is welcome. Thanks in advance.

Lincoln, kinda...
I've known a few people that have put thumbhole stocks on a hunting rifle.

None of them lasted two seasons before they went back to a more standard stock. They loved them for sighting in, not so much for carry and shooting in the field.

If you end up just wanting it to look like new again, Winchester does a really good job of putting new stocks on their old rifles. I had to go that route once.

have the same gun in .270 . Pulled my own bone head move and scratched it while tightening scope screw , screwdriver slipped . Drove me nuts for several years . Finally I bought a new stock online , I'll look tomorrow morning at it and see what exactly it's is , I think it is a Boyd's . It did come with the pad that says Winchester on the butt of stalk but I think it's a Boyd's . It fit pretty snug and tight but overall good . The barrel is free floating As it should be . I'm very happy with it

Scratches are like battle wounds, they just add character.

how much do you want to spend is the best question and do you want synthetic or wood?

Thanks for the feedback - greatly appreciated ! I think I'd prefer to go with a wood stock, guessing it will cost me more cash. Let me ask this .. . .if I decide to try and replace with the same stock, can I locate such on a website such as SDMF suggested? Would I have better luck reaching out to Winchester directly? I guess I'd be willing to fork out a couple hundred bucks, give or take, if I could get the same stock. I'm second-guessing the thumb hole option.
