WTH are these?

Was digging around in the garden today and found these.....thought they were bulbs but to my surprise they moved in my hand when I went to show the kids.

I think I know what they are, but wondering if you do?

I'm not positive but I think those are Moth cocoons . Those big ones that look like butterflies

They were very hard and segmented....I'm thinking not moth Davey.

Maybe closer to a graboid?

If it helps, the pointy end moved when I grabbed the rounded end....

Put them in a clear quart jar with some dirt they came out of and see what you get. The Bio learning goes on for the kids.

Most of the large moth have cacoons and belong to the same family as the Japanese silk moth. The only large moth crysalis that I can think of is the Sphingidae family which is the hawk moth or sphinx moth.These are the moths that so many people mistake for a hummingbird. Our most common is the tomatoe hornworm.

That was me when I was a kid, I liked everything nature related. I brought one to show and tell and we hatched it in the room but someone let it go before I got to see it. Another time I found a cool wasp nest that I was going to bring to show and tell but it had an odor so left it outside and grabbed it on the way to the bus , Once it warmed up we had a swarm of mad wasps in the bus and bus driver threw my prize nest in the ditch.

Davey - I did not hear about the bear! I'll have to go look it up now....been so busy gardening I probably wouldn't have heard it walk up before it mauled me!
