Wow that's a nasty one. A guy needs to really keep an eye on your financial accounts these days. Or another option is to just spend all your money so you have nothing to steal:) I actually froze my credit a while back, so nobody including myself could open any new lines of credit under my name without doing some serious leg work.

Never understood why these criminals will work so hard to steal money. The same effort could be placed on a job.

What next? What do they do with identity thieves when they catch one? They should have to register like a sex offender, or they should just be found in a ditch somewhere.

Fewer hours of working, more $$ than what a "real-job" would pay them. No taxes.

I suspect many of the scammers are on some form of public assistance (welfare) meaning they're not working anyway, lending credence to the saying, "Idle hands are the Devil's workshop."

The best thing one can do is keep an eye on your bank accounts daily, in today’s internet driven world there is no excuse to log in and check you accounts daily, this also helps build IP awareness with your bank…so if any odd or unfamiliar login occurs most banks will flag it … most major financial institutions use some form of risk driven security analysis

Another thing a person can do is to go into your banking account and setup mobile alerts.

I have it for my accounts, any time a debit or credit is made above $XX, I get a text message. It's pretty slick, I usually get the text before the ATM is finished doling out the cash. Same goes for my credit card.

Trick here is to find the level of transaction that you're comfortable with before getting a text. I kinda figure anyone wanting to scam my finances will probably start at something greater than $20.

That and I NEVER use my phone for any kind of banking or shopping. That's just asking for trouble, IMHO.

One of the problems, I think, is that they are rarely caught and frequently from another country. Lucky to just stop the damage, much less actually catch the criminal.

Last week I received a phone call where a guy with a very foreign accent told me his company had detected a virus on my computer. He was willing to help me out to get rid of said virus. When I asked what type of computer I was using, he told me some Microsoft version. Hmmmm, that's strange I suggested, how did you find a Microsoft virus on my Apple? He apologized for his mistake and he could also fix my Apple. I was chuckling as I hung up. Today's technology can be so wonderful and such a pain in the ass.

Did that to a guy claiming that the IRS had a warrant out for my arrest, said if I didn’t mail a check for $6,000.00 I was going to jail, told him I’d rather just give him my bank info for a direct payment. Gave him a BS routing and account # then told him “that’s the Bank of Go F*** Yourself you thieving piece of sh**” laughed my ass off when he started yelling at me...

Discover card got hacked about 2 months ago. Cancelled card, Discover cover the purchases not made by me( very good to work with). Issued new card, just used today at local auto dealer for repairs. Did not even know they had a set alert amount of $250 purchase. Repair bill was $500 + and received email on it. I like that. Can set amount you want.
