All good points. Labor was the big deal for helping our rancher as he had, at the time 300-600 head of cattle. All the hunters were pretty much allowed to hunt on his land in exchange for working cattle. And i'd say all of us city slickers eventually got pretty good at it. It usually included weaning calves too during deer season because we had the manpower then to do it.

I recall going down on an opening day one year and just driving around at sunset. That friday I spotted a dandy buck right at sundown.
Saturday was weaning day. All day Saturday I was so dang worried that someone else would get that buck or we'd never see it again. We even heard shots out west while working. Dang!! But we did kick him around a bit on Sunday and finally walked up to some buckbrush we had chased him into and took him at 25 yards. That buck was not gonna come out of there. A small buck (rack on just one side) and two does busted out of there at about 75 yards closure. The big guy finally came out at about 25 yards, gave 4 of us a rump shot (running directly away). We all missed. Someone shot into the ground between the animal and us (buck fever). Mine went between the tines i think as I do not shoot into the hams!! Second volley was two misses, a jammed gun and a downed 5X5. Dropped like a rock. Shot in the back of the skull and out the right eye. Never forget what the taxidermist asked me; "Why did you shoot him in the head?" He's hanging above the fireplace and the taxidermist did a fine job; although he threatened to use a different cape.

So keep in touch with the landowners, let them know you appreciate the opportunity and help wherever possible.

Fish was a always a go to when we used to hunt in the badlands. We also hunted on a guys land that him and his brother downed 12 krispy kreme donuts in a matter of an hour or so. Homemade pies, breads, restaurant gift cards in the nearest big town also seemed to go over well. 30 racks of blue yum-yums were always welcomed with open arms.
