Is there anything to worry about if the boat is left out in the heat? Those battery compartments can get VERY HOT on those hot summer days. Especially if the boat is sitting in the driveway for a few days.

Google says:

While lithium-ion batteries can perform well at slightly elevated temperatures, prolonged exposure to excessive heat significantly accelerates aging and reduces longevity, potentially leading to performance issues and even safety concerns.

Here's a more detailed explanation:
  • Heat and Battery Performance:
Higher temperatures accelerate chemical reactions within a lithium-ion battery, leading to faster aging, reduced lifespan, and decreased ability to retain a charge over multiple cycles.

  • Safe Operating Range:
Lithium batteries generally operate safely between 0°C and 45°C (32°F to 113°F).

  • Storage Temperatures:
For storage, the recommended safe temperature range is typically between -20°C and 25°C (-4°F to 77°F).

  • Risks of High Temperatures:
Prolonged exposure to high temperatures can increase the risk of thermal runaway (a chain reaction causing rapid temperature and energy release) and potentially lead to battery fires or explosions.

At what temperature do lithium batteries get damaged?

AI Overview
Ideal Operating Temperatures for Lithium Batteries – Fortress ...

Lithium batteries can be damaged by temperatures below 32°F (-4°C) or above 140°F (60°C).

Cold temperatures
  • Below 32°F: Can damage the battery permanently

  • Below freezing: Can cause lithium plating, which can reduce capacity and create safety issues

  • Slows chemical reactions: Can reduce voltage and capacity, and lead to temporary failure
High temperatures
  • Above 140°F: Can speed up battery aging and pose safety risks

  • Can cause thermal runaway: Can lead to battery destruction, fires, and explosions
Tips for safe battery temperature

  • Charge lithium batteries between 32°F and 131°F

@Vollmer did you do the same search/AI for lead acid to see what the comparison is? Curious what the same method you used would say.

So to devils advocate this, does this apply to Lithium auger batteries? Cause we all know they spend lots of time below 32 degrees lol.

Good subject….curious to learn more!

You can get the Li-Time 100ah batteries for the same price as a group 31 interstate deep cycle now. Whenever my current interstates die I'll be switching over and giving them a try.

nice thing bout lithium is you can leave them in the cold all winter, never need to take them out of the boat essentially, just dont charge them full or it could damage them, keep them about 50% if you are going to get them very cold.

interstate batteries are insanely priced... and really no better than walmart batteries anyway.
Yup..made by johnson controlls. You can look at their websites to compare and everything is the same except the sticker.

I bought 3 100 ah Li time trolling motor batteries on black Friday. Heck one agm can cost what I paid for all three. My buddy has had them in his boat the past 2 seasons with great results. Crazy how affordable they've become, and the guys that thoroughly test batteries on youtube really like them as well.

What charger are you guys running for these batteries? Would like to use a noco lithium 5 or 10 amp. Don't really want to replace mine.

Same question @all4eyes... If I can use my NOCO Genius, which I "think" I can... then I'll be buying the 100AH TM battery very soon. Like others, I'll keep the lead acid for starting.

This is what I bought off Amazon, reasonably priced and seems to work with them well.

Yea you really need to make sure they are LifePO4 technology batteries.

LiFePO4 (LFP) batteries are generally considered safer than other lithium-ion chemistries, especially when it comes to fire and explosion risks. They are incombustible, meaning they won't burn or explode when exposed to fire or mishandled, even during rapid charging/discharging or short circuits. While lithium-ion batteries can be unsafe if damaged or mishandled.

LifePO4 batteries are the safest lithium batteries due to their high temperature resistance and the use of a battery management system (BMS).

Weird that a person can't find any tests or reviews on this brand.

My favorite battery tester dude on youtube, the guy really loves testing batteries!
Check this out $132 for a 100 ah battery that did great in his tests.
And what a name, should get some good laughs in the boat!🤣🤣
