I had 1 single robin that stuck around till mid january, every day was eating old dried up grapes off my vines, then one day it disappeared, maybe ran out of food or got smart enough to fly south or something

We have had two in the yard all winter. I would pour water in the sump pump hole and pump it outside to give them fresh water all winter. It can be -10 below and there in the water taking baths.

Seeing Robins, Wood Ducks, and Mourning Doves all in the same week equals spring. Until I see that, spring has not arrived yet for this old grey beard.

I was just talking with the old man last week about this exact same topic. I bet I've had 6-12 here all winter, never seen anything like it before with Robins...It's getting to the point almost where there are too many though...We shot many birds on the farm back in the day but dad always said Robins and Barn Swallows are off limits...Old German I guess...

My great grandfather stepped off the boat from Italy and made it to the Hills. Dad told me when he was little the old man loved spring for one reason: Robins. He shot them with a .22 short, breasted them, salted the piss out of an iron skillet, heated it to smoking on a coal stove then flash fried them.

He had morels and ramps as sides when available: Not a fan of either. Ramps smell like a septic tank being pumped; morels seem to have an off "milky" flavor.

Yup,robins (real robins) we get thrush later in spring hangin outalong our creek, lots of darks hunting snow geese recently, swans,sandhills just about every duck in north America in full plumage bombing our spread,dang redheads (ducks) tried landing in our picked corn field, funny as hell coming in hot.

Killed first flies in 2025 today,stomped on ants invading my garage. Spring is trying to sprung.

The blackbirds will dominate my bird feeders while the Robins just march thru the lawn eating insects. I prefer the robins.

Same. It was time for a whoopin' if dad caught me shooting robins or barn swallows. I also remember discovering purple martins are NOT blackbirds.......

Barn swallows were fair game. Genocide was called for.

Robins....if you got caught. Were an ass whoopen...

I still remember the world record Robin kill with my BB gun. It was sitting on our rain gauge in the middle of the lawn. It was a risky endeavor since it was right outside my parents window and if there happened to be a hole in the rain gauge it was an EXTRA ass whoppen.

It was a stressful shot....the barn cats were well fed.

Yep robins were off limits. We had a scoring system and for some reason wood peckers were the top score.

Right but if it wasnt for those life experiences and ass whopping that came with some of them would probably be worse off
