Metal roof or shingles?

We've had some bad storms where I'm at last ten years. I know several that went tin. They just put it over shingles. Not directly on though...you screw down runners and attach to them.

When they did our big quonset 10 years ago, they went over the shingles.
They put 2x4 purlings over the shingles and then screwed the metal roof to the purlings.

If the hail is big enough to hurt shingles, it will hurt metal too. Metal can live at lot longer after hail, but I don’t think it’s worth it. You need to protect your entrances with snow guards for sure. Depending on roof slope you may need it to keep your gutters on too. Penetrations of any type suck on steel. With the cost difference I think for most shingles make more sense.

I went over the top of a single layer of shingles with tin. Used 1 x 4's to attach the tin to. No issues at all.

I wonder, for those that put metal over shingles using purlins, if mice ever make their home up in the space between the metal and the shingles.

I know a couple down in AZ with kind of a goofy little niche created where an overhang meets the roof. Who would have suspected a rat would setup his little house in there? I've offered to shoot it a couple of times as he poked his head out while we're having beers.

One interesting thing I’ve experienced is putting metal or shingles over SIPS roof panels. They’re totally solid under the roofing and surprisingly both materials hold up much better to hail. There’s no give under it so they don’t dent or damage as easily. With that experience, I’d guess steel over shingles would dent easily. Probably similar to steel over purlins.

As Obi-Wan stated, most insurance companies now have a cosmetic damage exclusion for metal roofing. Unless the hail damages the metal to the point that is could leak, they won't pay for replacing it. So you better get used to looking at hail dents on your roof.
I'm not a fan of the thin barn type metal a lot of people put on, but the thicker grade is ok. Personally, if I was going to go with metal, I'd go with the metal shingles that have granuals embedded in them. I had an oportunity to take a hammer to a sheet, and you could hardly see that I had dented it. Metro, I think, was the brand. Up on the roof, it wouldn't even be noticeable. Unfortunately, the metal shingle type is dang expensive.

Good question why did manufacturers quit making the interlocking shingles? Those things lasted forever and you never had to worry about the shingles breaking off

I've had t-locks. No THANK YOU. They were the worst effing shingle I've ever owned.

The T locks on my grandpa’s garages, back in the day, were ridiculous. Thick and heavy. It was a serious workout removing them.

Back when stuff was made out of real asphalt and asbestos LOL! I have had terrible experiences tearing multiple layers off!

My t-locks were installed in 2003 on a new build and were repaired due to wind damage in 2004 and 2005 before being totaled due to hail in 2006 or 2007. Wind just got them moving and kept ripping the lock portion off and they'd flap in the wind during a not so remarkable windy day. Numerous neighbors had even worse luck with them than I did. Replaced with architectural shakes and never looked back until I sold the place in 2012. I think they were supposed to be rated for 70 mph winds.

How's cell reception for metal roofing, i am also looking at metal roofing this summer. Can the metal roofing be fastened to the shingles?

We put a metal roof & steel siding on about 5 years ago. We have AT&T and it did hurt our cell reception inside the house. Other than that, we like the metal roof.
