I had the immense privilege of having a young man out in his pursuit of his first buck this past weekend and I thought the peanut gallery would like to participate in some small way
. His name is Jack, 12 years old, and he has spina bifida which has confined him to a wheelchair. He is a recipient of a special hunt provided by the Outdoor Adventure Foundation. This organization videos the hunts and then produces a show called Dream Makers on the Pursuit channel. Through this organization the recipients are awarded a special tag from the NDGF that allows them to hunt any deer with any weapon during any season. It was quite the battle to get him from the truck to the blind and I have a video to show some of the effort it took. We bumped a nice buck on the way in and if the video works you can see the deer running from lower right to left behind us as we are getting into the blind. Inside the blind there was a camera man, Jacks dad, and Jack. Not a whole lot of room with tripods and other equipment. Let me know guys if this video doesn't work. Well it was a good hunt. A half hour before sundown a nice 4x4 came right to them and Jack shot the deer right where he was told to shoot a deer. Right behind the shoulder. Unfortunately the deer was quartering to him and the shot went behind the diaphragm. I can't blame a first time hunter for doing exactly what he was told to do. The buck ran down the hill and into cover where he promptly laid down. Over the next hour they watched this deer get up 4 more times, walk a little and then lay back down. With that kind of hit we all know the better part of valor is to let them be for 12 hours or more. The only problem with that is the coyotes and we have more than our share. After talking it over with Jack and his dad, the decision was made to leave the deer overnight and start the recovery in the morning. Unfortunately our worst fears were realized the next morning. We went to the last place they saw the deer and the coyotes had found him first. The pic of the remains is exactly what I walked up on. Obviously NOT the outcome we were looking for. Have I mentioned before that I really dislike coyotes. Anyway, in the end, Jack was successful in taking his first buck and he seemed happy with the outcome. I couldn't be happier for him. The foundation will be mounting him for Jack and they already have a cape picked out so at least Jack will have the trophy to remember. The results are just a bit harsh on the sausage supply. So Congratulations Jack on a fine buck and I hope to see you next year with a youth tag in your pocket and a love for deer hunting in your heart.
