Under area preference I do not see anything for a youth tag.

do i just pick any unit? as the youth tag is statewide (except badlands)

You didn't say if the youth hunter age. If younger that 14 its only Doe tags and State wide. If 14 or 15 applying for a Buck tag, Whitetail Bucks are State wide
If apply for a Mule Deer you have to pick a unit.

Possibly I'm just dumb, but the language around the 14&15 year old thing is not entirely clear to me. Ref: https://gf.nd.gov/hunting/deer#youth
Last year, at age 14, but son got the Any Deer (buck) tag. Can he get one again this year at 15, or is that the end of guaranteed rifle tags for him? Does he have to apply in the regular lottery now?

If he received his youth buck tag he no longer eligible for youth tag. Regular tag from now on.

Haven’t heard of that one. I’ve been taking my cousins since they turned 11. Our spot is best for bucks when we have corn planted in the field around it. I did contact gnf to see the process to wait until they were 15 to get their buck tag (that lined up with our crop rotation). They said we could wait but then they couldn’t apply for a draw tag when they were 14.
