Question.

What has happened to most in today's society that they can't take the heat? 🤷‍♂️

When I grew up, there was no air conditioning in the house, we opened window at night and used fans. No misters were set up so people could cool down, no free ice, no cooling shelters.

Maybe went to the pool or lake on a hot day was the extent of us getting cooled down.

Don't shoot the guy asking the question, just curious on why this has changed over the years.
I purchased a new Bronce in 1985 and was the first vehicle that had AC. . You
Worked the hay fields with no ice water, just 2 gal vinegar jug wrapped in burlap and put in the stock tank overnight. As the day progressed the taste of vinegar got stronger but it was wet and thats what really mattered. LB
We used bleach jugs. The taste of bleach never left the jug. A when the well water tasted funny we would pour a could of gallons down the well. You would taste bleach for a few weeks.

Yep remember that well. Try to find a shade tree to set it behind for a couple laps 🙂

Now I feel privileged - we had an actual insulated water jug tied to the back of the hay wagon. Of course there was no ice in it because that would be too ritzy, but at least the water wasn't getting any warmer.

I was told that the burlap was more as shade so the sun didn't cause a magnifying effect with the clear jug and water and start a fire. Or throw a jacket over it the old timers up here said . And NEVER carry money and matches in the same pocket. (farmers matches) would light on coins ,especially quarters. ouch.

Similar memories here. Not much shade in the hay fields or ditches when stacking square bales by hand.

Lifting the bales over your head with a pitchfork to stack them 10 high on a trailer. Now that was hard work.

Hottest day I can ever remember. I was just 14, staying at my Uncle and Aunts when my cousin (same age) decided to sneak out after dark and go to a field party with the rest of the young idiots. Got hammered on beverages "borrowed" from parents or older siblings. Rolled back to the farm at around 3am trying to be quiet. Uncle woke us up at 4:30 with a breakfast of runny eggs and greasy bacon. Prayed at the porcelain alter a couple times before breakfast was over. Uncle dragged us two morons out into the field at sunrise and proceeded to drive the loader up and down the field while we PICKED ROCKS. Every rock that went into the bucket gave of a righteous GONG that drove fresh iron spikes into both our thick skulls. Prayed at the dirt alter more times than I care to remember. By 9am the heat felt like 900 degrees and my head was pounding. It felt like a decade, but we quit at lunch and headed back to the house. My uncle went to do chores and never said one word. Though the lesson was well learned. That was the last time I ever did that particular idiocy at my uncles.
