Remember, Canyon Ferry and Tiber reservoirs in Montana have had zebra mussels for a number of years now. This would suggest that Zebra mussel veligers have been floating downstream into Lake Sakakawea for years already. They just finally got the confirmation they're established in Sak.

There was no stopping this. I simply hoped it would be a few more years before they became noticed. Now I’m curious how long it will take to start seeing real change.

Someone who frequents or lives on the lake should start taking some pictures of a boat lift/dock on regular intervals. We could watch the progress "live" here! Just think V, you start making the millions you dreamed of because your zebra mussel live cam goes viral!

There has been ZM on lower Oahe for years. Nothing really noticeable on the north end yet. Lake Sharpe and Francis Case both have tons of them and the shad make the fishing way more difficult than any effect the ZM have had. I don't think the effects will be seen for years on Sak. I think the bigger effect will be on smaller lakes surrounding that could get infested and show big changes much more quickly.

I just made a trip to MT (from ND) and I had to:
1. Pay an extra $7.50 for my fishing license for AIS Prevention pass.
2. Buy a $30 AIS Boat pass.
3. Stop at a watercraft inspection site on my way into the state somewhere. This was free but you had to make sure you found one on your route and that was open when you were passing through. They tagged our boat in case we were checked.
4. Clipboard lady asked us at the ramp if we had our pass 1 of the 2 days we launched.

So 1 and 2 appear to be taxes to fund their workers for 3 and 4. I think 3 is probably the way to go to "slow" the spread. I think prevention is impossible. We asked them if we had to do anything else after 3 and they said "nope, you're here and clean so you are good to go".
Made a trip to Peck in September (group with 3 boats). We went through the check station and it was a fairly quick process. Think all 3 boats were on their way in less than 20 minutes with fees paid. Would be OK with the process IF it slowed the spread, but not convinced it will. Have a friend in Missoula that frequently fished a lake close to his home. He has to travel a fair distance to be checked just to return to the lake to fish. As a result, he fishes less. His choice but that sucks IMO!

Fees paid? You have to pay a fee to get your boat checked? What a joke.

10to1 it was a wake boat, can never get the bladders empty on those worthless boats.

I think the biggest joke is requiring the plug to be pulled. I can see if you have a leaky lund and pull it to let the water out. But why if the boat doesnt leak?

GF kill the weeds around the launch

The lake i fish most of the summer has zebes --- 1. i think the fish quality is better 2. Smallys do eat zebes that is the truth, 3 they kill weeds, 4 they have big swings in population enough where you dont see em then the pop drops. 5 Weedlines are much deeper 6 zebes do not hang on boat - i have never seen one attach to the trailer --- they are on the weeds that attach to the trailer and on my casting deck from pulling them in on weeds.

This whole thing with zebe’s is there won’t anywhere near the issues everybody there will be. Lake Erie is the fishery it is today because of zebe’s

I don't pretend to know how things will go here but Lake Erie is a much different body of water than Sak, Audubon and others in ND. Water clarity and chemical loads aren't comparable.

1,000 to 1 it was birds.

dig a hole in a field and fill it with water...in 3 months it will have minnows, perch, stickelbacks, etc swiming in it, all which hitched rides in on bird feathers. them tiny mussel larvae stick in the feathers of waterfowl and cormorants and spread like wildfire

I'm going to try to be optimistic...after all, every lake I've fished with zebra mussels in it was a pretty awesome fishery, and even better than it was prior to the mussels showing up.
