I am a 15%'r for must things.
I had some terrible service the other week, and still gave the lady a decent tip, she was way over busy so not really her fault.

mrs johnr leaves a tip on the bed if we are staying for more than one night, kind makes her feel as though the lady will do a better job.

Speaking of which, has anyone ever heard of a man doing the room cleaning type of work? Is it sexist to assume the cleaning lady is actually a lady?, as I have traveled extensively and never have I witnessed a man behind the maid cart.

I met my wife when she was head housekeeper at a hotel, I was the maintenance man. With access to the entire hotel we had fun! hotels are gross. But yes if they do a good job I tip what I think

OK good enough these motels I stay at are sometimes 45 to 145 $ a night, I don't have to pay for the rooms but I like to show people gratitude for their thankless jobs.

Restaurants I tip according to service. I have worked in the restaurant industry so I know how much it can suck so I usually tip pretty good. Never tipped for a hotel room, never thought of it really. I guess my tip is not trashing the room I stay in. I try not to make a huge mess!!

Kind of off topic, but what is a reasonable tip for guiding services?

I've stayed at resorts in Mexico and Hawaii. We leave a tip evey day we are there. Whats funny is if you leave money lay anywhere else besides the bed they wont touch it.

I don't wipe with the sheets and put the garbage in the baskets, is that enough of a tip?

I was a waiter through my senior year in high school and was taught that all good waiters must check on each table at least 3 times not including ordering or giving a check. So a total of 5 times to one table and yes it can be done. That is how I tip by that simple observation. Nobody has given me a example of what is good tip for a motel room?

Usually tip 20% with good service. One Christmas Eve my wife and I had breakfast at IHOP and tipped the waitress the same as the meal.

Per day? :;:huh

whatever you are feeling - and if you have spare change on hand

if they didn't refresh the coffee/filter - or moved the soap/shampoo out of the shower and back onto the bathroom counter (or worse yet threw them out and gave new ones on the counter) their tip is toast

this happens at least 50% of the time

Good help is so hard to find, isn't it Lovie?

If I have an extended stay at a hotel, which is often, I always put the "Do not disturb" sign on the door. Don't need anyone going through my stuff and I am certain that many do if given the opportunity. So, no cleaning done, no tip need be made.

Of course it depends on service for the most part but I usually stay above 25%-30%. It's just one of those things when you are around that sort of business that's kinda what happens. I also try and tip in cash whenever possible. And in a hotel I usually leave a 20 on the bed when I leave.

this thread makes me feel cheap. I tip 15% at a restaurant but have never tipped a maid.

The restaurant industry baffles me. The owner hires the servers and pays them almost nothing and then relies on the customers to pay his employees... :;:huh

They clean when you leave Mr. McDuck.
