If using a French press, do urself a favor and go whole bean and grind it. Try caribou medium blend or Starbucks house blend. Heat water to boiling, pour ~ 4-6oz into French press. Let steep for 4 min, heat water to boiling and fill French press to fill line, let steep for 4min. Plunge, enjoy! This is how I used to role. Now I have an Americano that does everything with a push of a button. I'm not a pro, but anyone who claims folgers is great, doesn't know coffee.

Just started trying roasting our own coffee, got 4 1 pound samples for 20 bucks on line. Not hard to do, still learning but really like results so far.

Since I retired I usually have a triple/quadruple latte in the morning while I do the Sudoku puzzle in the paper. I have the same equipment in SJ and at Lake Metigoshe. Both espresso machines are pump models - Estro Vapore - and I have gotten 2 Nespresso milk frothers so as to not need to use the steam frothers on the espresso machines. (Here's my favorite line - notice, there is no "x" in espresso!) I usually use Starbucks Espresso roast coffee in either ground or whole bean. No one has ever not accepted a second cup on a following morning.

I can tell a story about drinking 3 cups of espresso (not decaf) after a late evening dinner and wondering why I was "wide eyed and bushed tailed" in bed at 4 am the next morning tho. The following day was really long, but the night after went by very fast.

We've got a water dispenser with a hot spigot that come out smoking hot. No need to wait for it to boil before adding it to the French press. Grind the beans and add the water. Cold press coffee is better for the tummy tho.

espringers raises a good point. It has to be convenient over the long haul. Any prep/hassle is BS "before I've had my coffee".

My brother in HI uses a Zojirushi hot water dispenser. He's into this french press stuff. I haven't tried it.

galwhofishes put a glob of coconut oil in her first cup (brain food or some such). I drink mine black.

gevalia ships beans to our door - so sometimes we roast our own, sometimes use the gevalia

gevalia used to be the ####... But quality is slowly fading.

i'm by no means a coffee snob, but i like it way stronger than most of the older locals like it, which is how we brew at work... we have the k at home, which i really like, but am out of that coffee by 9 or 10, and can't drink the blonde stuff at work...

i wanted a press to be able to brew more at work as we have a hot water valve on the coffee maker there... after a few small samples yesterday, i'm now drinking better coffee than i can get out of the k, using the same brand of pre ground coffee... i'm impressed, and will start grinding beans when i'm out of grounds...

better joe from a $15 purchase from walmart - who'd a thunk...

now i need 1 for the camper and 1 for work... so far, very good...

I'm all about ease, put grounds in, fill with water, wake up and its ready and hot.
I don't make my own beer/wine either.

We use gevalia espresso roast. Best coffee available in the store. However, the coffee at the Dominican resort we stayed at was fantastic. As thick as mud and tasted like I bit into a bag of coffee beans.

Holiday Gas Station "Dark Roast" or the "Robust" pot at any Hilton property. Both have a good strong coffee flavor without being bitter or tasting burned. My favorite beans are/were McGarvey "Flame Room Breakfast Blend" but I haven't seen bags of McGarvey for quite a while.

yep - that flame room used to be a fav of mine as well - it started getting roasted darker and darker as Starbucks style began to F UP the coffee world - so I gave up on it.

any beans roasted to the point of oil being released is to dark for me - I like a medium-strong coffee (grinds/cup) but not dark roast styles - there's a a big difference that many coffee newbs don't understand - strong coffee isn't necessarily dark roast - drive me nuts

Kona for instance almost always sucks for that reason IMO - burnt with oils released

dunkin donut beans are pretty good

I too am not a fan of the burnt flavor. The dark roasting seems to kill all the other flavors. Which Dunking Donuts beans?
