During supper last night, the doorbell rang. I was greeted by a couple NDSU guys asking for donations. Now, they had no idea I was a staunch UND supporter and Bison loather, but I heard them out.

In all honestly, I felt bad for the kids. I know asking for money is difficult, and going door-to-door is even worse.

Apparently they were athletes on the NDSU lacrosse team. They said something along the lines of, "we're very fortunate to be able to practice in the new facility on campus, but it's way more expensive than we thought." I didn't know what that meant, exactly, but apparently the team has a chance to go to National Tournament, however they are $40,000 in debt.

Or that's what the sheet said that they handed me. Now, on their GoFundMe page (https://www.gofundme.com/h5vfe3ys) it says they are only $5,000 in debt. Which is still a sizable chunk, but a far cry from $40k.

The letter goes on to explain:

While new practice facilities on the NDSU campus have given the Bison the privilege of practicing indoors this winter, they were expensive. Along with this expensive facility that we had the privilege to use, budget cuts within Student Activities affected our financial circumstances. Due to those new and unforeseen expenses and circumstances, the Bison are short of their financial goal. Also, because no team can know for sure that they are going to the National Tournament before April, budgeting and planning early on in the season for the trip is difficult.

So with that said, does anyone know if other NDSU teams share the same fate? I assume the indoor facility they speak of is multipurpose.

If anyone feels like helping them out, the link is above. I know there are plenty of Bison fans outside the FM area.

Although, who knew NDSU had a D-II Lacrosse team?? I honestly thought that was a club thing.

not a huge supporter of NDSU seeing as how i am a UND guy but that really sucks, work your butts off all year make the tournament at the end of the year and then you arent sure if you can go because your school cant pull $40,000 out of the shit ton of money it makes on their football team? Sucks for those kids..

That was kind of my thought. I mean, I get it: Football is the holy grail at NDSU and undoubtedly makes the lion's share of profits. But a title is a title...it's another feather in NDSU's cap. I dunno. I've never even heard of athletes at a collegiate level having to knock on doors with their hands out just of the chance to go to a national tournament.

Sucks for them but I would have a hard time writing them a check. First of all their athletic director should have the financials figured out. Seems kind of odd to me that a team can go through the year in debt and no one says anything.

My guess is that they are still on club-level status and therefore, not supported by the university. Otherwise, they wouldn't need to pay rent to use campus facilities. Sucks on all levels. I hope they get to go.

My guess is they were having a party that night and were short on beer money.

I just visited the official bison athletic site (which made me throw up a little in my mouth). It does not list lacrosse as an official sport. Must be a club team. Maybe they could have a car wash.

Ya this makes more sense now. Would be a real fail by the athletic department if it was an official team.

How much are strippers nowadays anyway. Remember, you're paying them not only to strip, but to keep their mouths closed.

Yes the NDSU Lacrosse team is a club team, a very good one at that, but they are in no way funded by NDSU's athletic department. It's no different from UND's club teams. They have to raise their own funding too.

Good to know that UND is still putting out high quality graduates that don't know the difference. :;:duel

I think you lacrosse team is a shadow account. They raise bail money for your football players. :;:stirthepot

That's what I get for setting my school pride aside and believing Bison. Won't make that mistake again.

This kids never mentioned it was a club team. Made it sound like this was pretty legit...

Then again, the football players don't even know what surveys are or how they work, so I guess nothing surprises me any more.

They probably assumed you knew that it was a club team like most knowledgeable people.

Who raises the bail money for UND's? Or is that why they had a $5 million deficit?

Unless you get at least 1000 fans to your events your sport is not worth funding. Colleges need to quit wasting money on money pits like unpopular sports. No wonder why there is so much student debt

Ha you guys are bigger bitches than bloods and crips when it comes to the two colleges in your state. Kids out trying to raise money to help them selves. What would this have to do with student debt in any way it's a club team.........

Fund raising is typically door to door, store to store. I find it much more honorable to do a face to face attempt at success than putting some shit on fagbook and waiting for other lazy do gooders to give away money.
Good on these guys for having drive and dedication to help themselves. Future community leaders right there.

My girls all sold girl scout cookies, never did I take the sales sheet and do it for them, WTF does that teach a child.

Turns out I see it slightly different, and always buy/support a young person trying to accomplish a quality goal.

Worked at the local home show yesterday, the boy scouts had a booth set up selling Jerky. A gentleman and his boy came to the table selling boxes of jerky, fund raising for whatever. Didn't seem legit with the uniform and all so I told him to scram and go play some video games...haha.

Any college sport that cannot fully support itself on a regular basis should be chopped. This is college, it ridiculous that any institutional money should be used to fund sports that are perennial money losers. That goes for all sports, FB, Hockey, Baseball etc... If you have to beg from door to door to fund a program, you question has been answered. If your community cares enough for a sport the cash register will speak in favor of the sport. Cutting half of all college athletics would be a good starting point.

You do comprehend what a club team is right?
