Okay so in town we have a Red Squirrel problem. They attack the wife's bird feeder and have chewed a hole into my storage shed. Did a couple of them in with the pellet gun out the window.
Still have one left. Set a couple of the large (rat) traps with peanut butter on in the storage shed. I thought I was on the right track. These even had what I called a hair trigger. However the peanut butter disappeared without the trap going off. So after a couple of resets I did a better job of baiting the trap. Okay I caught a Mouse. Went to take him out of the trap and saw that his head was half way eaten off. Really eaten off. The Big question is would a Red Squirrel do that or do I have some other critter in there???:;:huh

Not only will squirrels eat a dead mouse, but so will other mice. Either that, or I had something mean hanging out in my shop. Haven't caught anything for quite a spell now so I think it was just other mice.

I hate mice even more than ticks and skeeters.

Man, a red squirrel problem actually sounds kind of fun. NDA Squirrel Hunt....

Yup, however this guy has great hearing. I just slide the widow 1/2 inch and its like he is shot from a cannon. Faster than a Quarter Horse coming out of the chute. Need a silencer on the old 410.

Mice will eat other mice. I have watched it first hand on a double catch with a sticky trap. It was a gruesome sight. Not sure if squirrels will chew on mice, though. Keep setting traps and keep whacking squirrels with the pellet gun. Maybe try a giant sticky trap too.

I had this issue when I lived in Fargo. Red squirrels would destroy my bird feeders and one got into one of my sheds and stripped the outer layer of every cardboard box I had in there...it was a mess. I bought a live trap and put some nuts & bird seed in there as bait. Next day I had him and I can't explain the joy I had putting a pellet gun to his head.

Destroy ALL red squirrels with extreme prejudice!!!! They are the WORST critter for wrecking houses, sheds, bird feeders, trees, and just about anything else. They are aggressive as hell and will chase fox squirrels and every bird away from a feeder and out of an area right quick and YES they will eat a mouse or any other dead critter they find. If it was my house, I would hunt'em like a deer and wait'em out. Then cover every hole in the buildings with steel sheeting. I HATE them things. Good Luck!!!

Gotta love "urban" hunters. I'm surprised no one's come out with flower garden, lawn shed, or house siding patterned camo to help you boys out when hunting those ever dangerous vermin.

If you catch 'em alive, you could love him, and feed him, and what a fine pet owner you'd be! We want to see pictures of his new surroundings you build him!

Kill everyone of them little shits. I have watched them take wood shakes off a house to get to the attic.

Be careful with the squirrel slayin, I was told that it's a big ass fine as there is a season for them when the local game warden drove through my yard and saw my Havahart (and shoot them) traps. I hate those bastards, but found that mixing a one gallon sprayer filled with water, a few drops of dish soap and a can of cayenne pepper keeps them from chewing holes in my hoses and hydro lines on machinery.

There's a loophole in that law though, We have one of the first old squirrel killing machines they came out with and they are grandfathered in. You can control any rodent population year around with them if you want to, seasons don't apply to them. They must work good because we never see squirrels in the yard. We put ours up in the shed during the summer but usually bring it in during the winter.

When we bought our first home in Fargo, I quickly noticed our little red neighbors were very, very prevalent. And quite a destructive nuisance. Not just the normal chattering and nut throwing that squirrels do, but gnawing holes in places they shouldn't. So I bought a pellet gun and talked to my neighbors, who were in full support of me thinning the herd and assured to keep a tight lip since discharging said "weapon" in city limits is frowned upon by the fuzz.

I decided to count coup by carving a notch into the butt stock with every KIA.

Averaged about 5 a week for the first few weeks. Had a couple 2- and 3-squirrel days.

Things finally slowed down and I counted my marks. I'd killed over 60 of them buggers.

Now, I'm not going to fully say I helped, but there were a lot, lot fewer red squirrels by the next spring.

the red devils must die at our house (lead)

Royce has been narking on them so long that he longer even bothers to yip/whine at the relatively benign larger grey and fox-looking squirrels cuz I don't shoot them

but he nearly craps his pantaloons at the sight of a LRB (little red bass-terd) cuzz he knows it's game on with those

his false alerts are down close to zero now - only freaks when he spots bunnies or LRBs now - good boy

- - - Updated - - -

reminds me - just the other day we were in the yard and Royce was carrying his favorite ball

a big squirrel f'd up and tried to climb the rain gutter just as we came around the corner

before I knew it Royce had him - and never dropped his ball - I sat there amazed as Royce paraded the grounds with his ball in one side and a big fat gray squirrel hanging out the other

He didn't drop his ball until the gray bit his lip and Royce needed to whiplash him into submission

I'll never forget his jaunty trot - ball and squirrel in tow - I still find that one hard to believe

You guys in Fargo could use a few Pine Martens , We don't see small game and upland game like we used to.
