Well at the folks place today and all the warm water fish namely bass and bluegills that were all hanging out deep last week in their winter holes have suddenly shot to the top of the lake. Was mapping the lake this afternoon and every time I came straight into the bank I was driving big schools of gills in front of the boat. Got fairly interesting when the bass figured out the pattern and would swarm in as I approached the shore and all hell would break loose as gills and bass would both come flying out of the water. It was so crazy at times that some of them were slamming into the side of the boat. So with the water in the mid 50 up shallow its starting to trigger happy time for topwater guys.

Swapped out my helix 9 that I couldn't get to play along up shallow and the new one works like a charm. The auto chart live is one kick ass program to say the least. Got to finally map up shallow which is nice since that's where most the fish hang in cottonwood. Only problem is it does over shoot the edge of the lake with the map but no big deal. The blue line is the approximate shoreline.

Oh crap, i was thinking Cottonwood Park - not his one. So on a place like this are the people living here paying for G&F to stock it or is that taxpayer dollars at work? I know they stock fish into the park pond, but its so shallow I cant imagine it not winter killing every year.

Summer mode does seem to be a bit early this year, I've been listening to frogs sing for about 3 weeks already.

Was a big bug hatch yesterday with the sunny day warmer temps. I imagine that triggered all the bait fish and panfish to move towards the shallows and surface. Hopefully this 60 degree weather can hang on to push the water temps up on the bigger waters.

That's the right lake but it's private so we have to stock it ourselves. The game and fish would stock it but we would have to open it up to the public and it just gets to crazy with all the high school kids coming down to swim and opens up the association to lawsuits if someone were to drown.

At this point the gills are not worth catching other then for little kids since they are WAY WAY WAY over populated and very stunted. The large and small mouth bass population is finally getting big enough to make a dent in their numbers which is nice since now there are more bass in there per square foot the any other lake ive ever seen. Here's a shot from last year of some following the boat. Not uncommon to have hundreds follow you around in the boat as well as well swiming.

Yep, Cottonwood lake is private. No federal dollars going in there. They pay for their own fish. I also live only a couple blocks away. Would love to take my girls in there and catch some little panfish, but if you let one person go in, then everybody wants to. I totally understand.

Cottonwood Park Pond has a robust population of pike right now. that would be why it has nothing but pike, more or less.

That was one thing I was a bit shocked about near sundown was the water was covered in what looked to be the flight stage of ants but the fish were not eating them. I'm guessing by then the fish might have sunk down a bit for the night. Was out on the water till ten and it was nice to be out there in short sleeves and be perfectly comfortable.

Allen do you deal with the Aquaphor around here at all? Just wondering since in the 26 years we have had a house there I've never seen it drop five feet in a matter of months. The river being low is obviously the biggest factor but have to wonder if Bismarcks new intake might not be drawing it down a chunk as well.

I guess its Harmon or McDowell for the kids! :) I may try to swing up to McDowell and see if I can snag a couple before taking the youngest (2 yo).

I don't specifically work with the groundwater in and around Bismarck, but am reasonably familiar with it.

The groundwater in and around Bismarck is low now simply because we were pretty dry last fall and this spring right up until last week. It just hasn't been getting the recharge it's accustomed to. In general though, the groundwater along the Missouri is heading towards the river, not being supplied by the river. The new city water intake is a unique example where they pump enough to actually reverse the groundwater flowpath (very locally) and eventually get river water into the city water supply.

The higher the river the slower the natural movement of water from the aquifer into the river. Conversely, a lower river speeds the groundwater in its path to the river. We know groundwater though is almost always heading to the river by taking a windshield look at water quality. Very little dissolved iron in the river, but take a look at any lawn with a sprinkler system out by Fox Island and note the color of the water stain on the trees and buildings. That isn't river water, it's groundwater sourced up and away from the river itself. It also tends to be high in nitrates, so you can forego buying fertilizer as you will essentially be having your upstream neighbors supplying it for you if you have your own shallow well.

I'd be surprised if Bismarck's new water intake has a significant effect on the water table more than a couple hundred feet away from the collector wells. They are designed to capture river water to avoid having to treat the iron problem, etc.

Interesting so its effected by the river only in reverse of what we thought. Thanks for the info people around the lake are starting to get nervous because of how far how fast it dropped. Most don't.know that the lake is as deep as it is but having been on that lake as much as I have in the last 26 years I can say that this drop is extremely out of character for the lake. Couple feet is common in dry years and is generally a slow steady drop this is closer to 6 feet in one year with most coming late fall last year. This one drop has taken the lake back to peak of the drought levels of spring 93 and she's still dropping. Here is a couple shots of it on the first the red line is the water mark from last July vs today and the second just shows a few of the docks showing last summer to now. Hopefully we get more rain but more so getting the river up should help. Hope it happens since I'm waiting to put the dock out till it stabilizes.
