I always load one round short and leave them loaded. I don't subscribe to the full mag and one in the chamber. A 15 round mag gets filled then one chambered. A fellow once told me three things will get you killed. No training, no extra mag on you, and an unchambered round. With the extra mag you don't need to put full mag tension on your magazines springs.
I did have to buy new springs for my Kimber 1911 because after two years the slide was working faster than the last two rounds could come up in the magazine. I also had to buy even heavier mag springs when I went to a 24 lb recoil spring. Now my eight round mags will only hold seven rounds.

I have some 33 round clips for my Glock 19 and I load only 30. If you cannot get it done in 30 its best you quit, but then I have more clips. LB

I have one of those for my Sig. Gets spendy to run that thing a half dozen times, and then it's time to drop your suppressor in the ultrasonic.

I have multiple mags for every weapon that takes them.

Alternate mags every month or so.

No time to load mags when the time arises.

Thankfully it is extremely unlikely any of us will ever need to discharge a firearm in self defense. It is even more unlikely that more than 10 rounds would be needed in a self defense scenario.

Load 10 in a 15 rounder and leave it. Won't hurt the spring, and the perp will be dead or back out the front door before the last round is chambered.

Boy that is some interesting logic.

Are we talking clips or magazines?

All are loaded full, and non have one in the chamber. I know its wrong, but I just feel like I am going to reach for it in the heat of it all and shoot myself in the sack. Racking the slide should be fairly quick if needed.

FYI from Merriam Webster:

a device to hold cartridges for charging the magazines of some rifles
also : a magazine from which ammunition is fed into the chamber of a firearm/pistola

There is a 99.9% chance your right, but I dont go to any casinos either. Expect the best, be prepared for the bad.

IDK, my P226 .40 has the mag full with 13 rounds + a round in the chamber and has lived it's last 15-years this way. With that said, I purposely went with a single/dual action gun for this reason. Sitting by the bedstand, I don't feel unsafe at all with one in the chamber all the time since the hammer isn't cocked, and god for bid if I need it in the middle of the night and I'm half out of it, groggy and sleepy, it's one less step I have to think about. Once or twice a year I dig it out and do my qualification and compliance testing and make sure it's all good, typically off the back deck of the house, lol.

I have various handguns stashed around the place, BUT, I also have a couple M590s in key areas.

I won't reach for any handguns in the middle of the night unless that's my only option.
