We've had 4 lines/$100 with Cricket for 5+ years, been good. Maybe isn't quite as good as Verizon in some rural areas but few issues.

I will have mrs johnr look into this. As I am not even on our account anymore. I have a work phone, which I use as a personal phone too.
I believe she probably has a phone payment on the plan, as we have 2 kids still on the plan, and seems they need phones about every 18 months...

Do they take over payment on them iPhone purchase installments?

You make interest-free monthly installments on the phones until u trade in or pay them off.. Typically u can pay them off anytime but the companies usually run deals if u trade a phone in they'll pay/reimburse you part of the installments.
You can pay them off anytime as well if you choose to do so.
It's the taxes and fees on the "postpaid" plans that really get ya (adds up to about 17% monthly taxes and fees). You don't get anything but state tax on prepaid plans and usually a discount if on autopay which knocks those out and the prepaid plans are so much cheaper, don't every get tricked or sold into the fact that you ever have to get rid of your older grandfathered plan.
Definitely lots of tricks and loopholes around all of this the big companies don't like the consumer to know but that's with almost all big companies.

I dont have them but from what i can twll is they use at&t and t mobile towers. I have been having coverage issues with verizon and i contacted them about it. Verizon told me there cell phone towrrs do not have the capacity and are congested in bis/man area. They said they contacted the local engineers about it and there are zero plans to update capacity. I have talked to a numbet of guys avout their covetage and it does seem that at&t or tmobile are the better options for cell service in ND. It seems bith of them since 2022 have added large amount of capacity in tue state where verizon seems to be sitting on their asses and just sucking in monthly payments. I havnet yet but i am going to br swtiching. Being that consumer cell uses the at t towets and t mibile inthink it would be a good kption. Not sure if anyone here works for verizon and can let us know if the verizon guy i spoke with also was wrong..i was surprised he told me what he did. He also refunded me a months payment over it.

Verizon is a major clusterfuck, ive dealt with them both for personal and business service and its just amazing they can keep a company that large running. Trying to get someone on the phone who knows anything is nearly impossible. I recently switched both me and my parents from ATT to verizon because they promised free phones, $200 gift card per line for switching. I got the phones, but still trying to figure out how to get the gift cards they promised. To get the numbers switched and functional it took me 3 trips to the verizon store in bismarck and 1 trip to ATT and I probably spent a good 5 hours total with them working on it. If I had it to do over I wouldnt have switched.

our family has consumer cellular. 3 phones, $115 or so. unlimited internet, talk, text. coverage gets spotty in rural areas, and for some reason, around the bismarck airport/lincoln area, but overall we're pretty happy with their service. i don't plan on switching anytime soon.

yes, only place i've lost a call to dickinson is around the rest area west of New Salem, and in the hills immediately west of there.

Straight Talk,, Switched 6 years ago and never noticed a difference.. Only thing that kinda sucks is going fishing on Lake Winnipeg and others have service and I do not. It advertises calls/service TO Canada and Mexico.. Found out that doesn't meant calls/service in Canada and Mexico. Pay like $30/m

Starlink’s cell phone service, often referred to as Direct to Cell, is a satellite-based connectivity solution designed to provide mobile coverage in areas where traditional cell towers don’t reach. It’s a collaboration between SpaceX’s Starlink and various mobile carriers, with T-Mobile being the primary partner in the U.S. The service uses Starlink’s low-Earth orbit satellites to connect directly to standard LTE smartphones, no special hardware or apps required, as long as the phone is compatible and you’ve got a clear view of the sky.
Right now, the service is in a beta phase, which started in early 2025 after FCC approval in late 2024. It’s focused on text messaging, including SMS and emergency services like texting 911, covering remote areas across the continental U.S., Puerto Rico, and parts of Alaska. The beta is free for testers, open to T-Mobile customers and even those on rival carriers like AT&T or Verizon, provided they have an unlocked, compatible phone—think recent models like iPhone 14 or later, Samsung Galaxy S21 or newer, or Google Pixel 9. T-Mobile’s aiming for a full launch in July 2025, when it’ll expand to include picture messaging, voice calls, and data services, though speeds will likely be modest (think 2-18 Mbps, not 5G-level).
The big draw is eliminating dead zones—Starlink claims it can cover 500,000 square miles of the U.S. that lack terrestrial service. Your phone automatically switches to the satellite network (branded “T-Mobile SpaceX” on your screen) when you’re out of regular coverage, assuming you’re outdoors with minimal obstructions like trees or mountains. After the beta, pricing kicks in: free on T-Mobile’s premium Go5G Next plan, $10-15/month for other T-Mobile plans (with an early adopter discount if you sign up before March 1), and $20/month for non-T-Mobile users.
There are limitations. It’s not a replacement for traditional cellular—bandwidth is limited, so don’t expect streaming Netflix in the wilderness. Texting can take seconds to minutes depending on satellite availability, and indoor use is spotty since it’s designed for open skies. Some users on X have griped about connectivity issues, like texts not sending or conflicts with Wi-Fi calling, but that’s par for the course with a beta. Starlink’s launched over 400 Direct to Cell satellites so far, with plans for thousands more to boost reliability and add features like global roaming or IoT connectivity.
It’s a game-changer for rural areas, hikers, or first responders, but it’s not flawless yet. If you’re in Bismarck, ND, it could be handy for those times you’re out in the sticks—just make sure your phone’s on the supported list and you’re not expecting instant replies.

Completely agree with Lycan regarding Verizon. Spend a fair amount of time on east end of Sak, south on Oahe, as well as @ hobby farm SE of Bis. Would hate to make a change only to discover coverage issues in those areas. Verizon is not only expensive but their customer service seriously sucks.

We switched from Verizon to T Mobile about 2 yrs ago. I hated it for 3 wks as my ring doorbell wouldn't work with TMobile. I went to the store and talked to them. They gave me a different modem and haven't looked back. Even hunting up in N.W. Alberta and 30 miles from no wear I had service when the guides didn't, when we would get to the top of the hills

About 4 months now with Visible along with my family and allot of friends and coworkers. It is EXACTLY like what I had with my verizon unlimited plan since it's owned by verizon and uses the same towers. Super happy with it.
And right now I'm paying $10 a month through Dec because when folks sign up with my code at the beginning of this post they get $20 off for a month and so do I. And I can bank 12 of those a year, pretty awesome went from $245 a month to $60 for 3 phones and it worked just like my verizon plan did up on lake Winnipeg also. 👍👍🎣🎣

Sprint and Verizon run off cdma technology which is pretty outdated and non-global like GSM technology is (at&t & t-mobile and pretty much the rest of the world are all gsm). All these smaller companies have lease agreements with the big 4 to use their network/towers. Buy unlocked phones and use the smaller companies if you don't wana pay out of your ass every month.

Verizon has always worked in nodak because theyve been here for ages and could roam off alltel towers pre 2011 before alltel got purchased by AT&T and switched all those towers over to GSM. Now at&t and tmobile have quickly caught up since. Customers that just simply switched carriers before doing their homework to save money were a nightmare if they couldn't get service, 95% of time in rural areas. Ask to Test a loner phone out or ask around before taking that plunge, but all carriers have come a long damn ways in the last 10-15 years!

Putting phone installments/payments on a plan along with 17% taxes/fees and the insurance they hold a gun to your head at time of purchase is straight up hwy robbery. Ask me how I know.
