My cable broke in my atv winch. I purchased a rope style as advised by many. Well the rope is 1/4 in x50ft. In watching and reading a few things they recommend not using all 50ft…too long. Use just 40. Well the one I purchased has a hammered clip on one end to screw into hole on barrel of winch and of course the other has loop for hook. So I cant cut 10 ft off then attach to barrel. Thoughts??

I would cut it where you want it. Take a couple of zip ties and pull them really tight. Run the bolt/screw thru the loop

I'd use the 50 footer. Make a permanent mark at 40 ft and that's where I'd stop letting it out.
I think the issue is too much rope doesn’t wind up well. Most of the power of a winch comes from the first(closest) few feet wrapped around winch. If too much rope you can lose the power.

Hammered clip?

The rope at the hook will always feel full load so I wouldn't mess with the business end. Cut off whatever is on the winch end and run rope through the hole. The wraps will take the load through friction. Load won't go to the last bit unless you fully extend.

Can you see the little clip on other end? Neat idea. Don’t have to thread through whole in barrel. It just lines up with hole and has a small screw to go into hole and it’s attached. I’m sure I can cut it off and fray rope apart so that some strands can feed through hole?? Just don’t want to compromise anything .

Yep you need consistently wrapped tension to transmit torque. Any slack in the wrap means no/lessened pull.
You knew that already.
Carry on.

Can you wedge the pressed aluminum tube open w a chisel or something ? Then slide the protective sleeving and aluminum tube up 10 ft, and re-crush the aluminum tube in a vise?

Why? If the 50 ft fits on your winch I don't see the issue.

One step closer to the end.
Explain how that magnifies pulling force.
You lost me.
I thought unless it is some type of pulley system the pulling force (in line) would stay the same. ??

Or are you jumping on the cable/rope - midstream?

Always keep 3 wraps on your drum. How it attaches really doesn’t matter as it should never bear any weight.

Take the shitty 7x19 GAC they default to from the factory and order a good quality 6x36 IWRC to replace it. They almost always break or wear out before they corrode. If you actually use them.

Sorry - It is a pully system basically. I should have said snatch RING. When you use a synthetic rope you can use smooth metal rings instead of a true pulley.

my brain is telling me that you would get more power the farther out you let the rope... motor puts out the same amount of power but its pulling less rope in at each turn should result in more power/rotation of the drum, no?

Well the cable that came off was 3/16 and only 45 ft. So the new rope is 1/4 and 50 feet. I just did a youtube look and it showed guys cutting off 10 feet so it would wind and fit better. However I just called a polaris dealer and talked to service guy. He said the 50 should fit fine as long as it is wound up inline and with tension. So...I'll just do it that way. Thanks for thoughts!
