Question about Guns and Registering Guns

One record that doesn't go away is the firearm data and your identification should you go hunting in Canada. Their State Department notifies ours and you are likely on a "potential terrorist" list. Thank you Patriot Act. Also a passport can be scanned and inform customs more information about...

    Bill's Gun Shop

www.rrrmc.com has nicer ranges. The 6 station rifle range is 100 meters long, the 50 foot pistol range has 15 or 16 shooting stations. Both have NRA certified safety officers.

    5.56 Greenball Ammo

The Winchester 64 grain Power Point bullet makes a 223/5.56 an effective deer round. Barnes likely makes a bullet that works very well too, but they will cost a lot more/round. A friend of mine once shot a jackrabbit with green tip ball ammo. It ran at least 1/2 mile before bleeding to death...

Reloading - Distance to the Lands

Checked the reloading data for Barnes and they still recommend seating .050" off the lands. That may be good advice for any bullet that doesn't have a soft lead core.

    Jiffy model 30

In theory, a 24" girthed fish will fit through an 8" hole. Just how fat are your fish? My BIL has a 10" auger and finds that eater sized walleye can turn in the bigger hole and shake the hook. Something to consider.

Reloading - Distance to the Lands

Hornady bought the old Stoney Point OAL measuring device. Scheels sells them and the modified cartridge cases you need. Just follow the directions exactly and you'll know the OAL that places THAT bullet on the lands. Remeasure for different bullets. How far off the lands? .03" is a...

    Most concealable handgun?

Obviously the most concealable is the smallest one. but I have no problem concealing a 4.5" barreled 1911 (commander-sized). Thin is more important for concealment than length. The most popular handgun cartridges are relatively small, so barrel length is important to provide enough velocity.

    Best pistol?

As mentioned before, the best for you is one that fits your hand. Put the grip firmly into the web between your thumb and fore finger. Line up the barrel with the bones in your arm. Now, can you operate the trigger? Test fire something in that caliber. Is the recoil uncomfortable for you...

    Reloading software

I've used my Pact chronograph for years as well. Generally I find that pursuing that last 100 fps velocity hinders accuracy in my over-the-counter production rifles. But a chronograph is the only consumer tool that can be used to even estimate pressures because pressure is proportional to...

    Reloading software

Quickload is very versatile, but it is predictive. The data generated isn't the result of actual testing in a pressure barrel, it's generated according to a thermodynamic model. Before using any of Quickload's maximum powder charges, I'd double check with the powder maker's website. I've had...

    Thoughts on Generators

I'd suggest visiting NATCOA forums. Lots of discussion on generators there. Like this thread, Honda and Yamaha lead the recommendations, but the Smart Tools generator has a lot of fans as well.

Which New Truck Do I Need?

Actually weigh your camper and boat with normal loads of stuff in them. The towing capacities of drivetrains and the load-bearing capacities are listed in the pickup manufacturer's brochures, normally near the back. Remember the weight on the kingpin of a 5th wheel runs 20%-30% of the total...

    AWD or 4WD vans?

My wife and I are starting to look for a replacement for her V6 Honda Accord because the low seats really bother my lower back. Start with Edmunds.com, Car and Driver.com., and Consumer Reports online and look for words like "agile" and "nimble" in their descriptions. That will exclude most...

Howa .204 ruger. Just won one, thoughts?

It's actually handier as a prairie dog rifle than a 22-250. The recoil is so light, the shooter can see his bullet strikes with even a 10X scope. The shooter doesn't need a spotter. Bullets are offered in 32 and 40 grain weights, one or the other of those will shoot well in most rifles.

    Not buying fiocchi shells again

I don't bother with 3" shells for upland game, but I've had no problems with Golden Pheasants in my old Ithaca 37 (2 3/4" only), Remington 11-96, S&W Super Twelve, or Beretta 470 SxS. You'll notice only one of my guns is heavy enough for comfort with 3" magnums.

    Benefits

"Obamacare" did absolutely nothing to control medical costs! As written, it wasn't supposed to. The Congress passed it without reading it because they didn't write it. The parts about Rx meds was written by PHARMA, the hospitalization parts by the hospital lobby, etc. Each lobbing group...

12 or 20 gauge for pheasants?

Field and Stream's shotgun editor did a comparison some months ago when he visited the Federal factory. There is quite a difference in pattern density. I have and shoot 12, 20, and even a 28. Lightweight guns got more and more attractive as I aged.

Helper Springs vs Suspension Air Bags

My pickup camper has the refrigerator, generator, and an outside storage bin on the right side. I use air bags to level it and to prevent sagging when the camper is loaded to the max with stuff and my boat is in tow. Since I have the side-to-side issue, mine are plumbed separately. For access...

    Spotting Scope

If you intend to use it a lot from a vehicle, I find that I have to twist half way around to use my straight eyepiece spotting scope. If it was angled, I could rotate it in its mount so the eyepiece pointed more toward me and I could sit more normally. Of course, that requires a scope that...

    blood moon

Since deer either see red poorly or not at all (it's grey to them), the effect was minimal.
