    In-line temp guage

I had/have a depththerm that clipped on the end of my fishing line. I bought it years ago, I think at KMart. It worked.

    Went a little overboard

You should trade for one of those pedal-powered Hobie fishing kayaks. When inspiration strikes, they can be quite fast. Look for a You tube video titled "that's no catfish."

    Fishing Alone?

My dog counts, doesn't she? If she doesn't, I almost always fish alone.

Why are people so obsessed with selfies

To satisfy the same self obsession that makes them text, Facebook, or Twitter while driving. The world needs to know where they are, what they look like, what they had of lunch, and what kind of mood they're in. Or they don't have a life and need to pretend to have one.

    Missoula MT Area Fishing help

Have you Googled Missoula trout outfitters? There are a few, most describe their services and the waters they fish.

    Dealer recommendations for a kicker?

Back in '09, I bought a carryover model Yamaha T8 from Island Marine.com. Shopping from a dealer that actually discounted out-of-date engines saved me about 30% compared to three ND dealers. Another internet dealership to check is, I think, called boats.net, a big Florida dealership that sells...

    Trailer Lights Issue

NAPA seems to have a contract with Hopkins, a maker of all those different connectors. (If you want an external fuel filter/water separator, go to O'Reilly's.) I changed my pickup's rear socket to one with both the multi-point round connector to one with a round and a flat socket. It took...

    656 International Tractor

Do an internet search for a 3-point conversion. I saw one a few years ago for just a few hundred dollars. I think it was made in Canada.(?)

    Elk Rifle

It would depend on the hunting conditions. Three very respected gun editors chose three very different "ideal" cartridges for elk. Elmer Keith, an Idaho rancher and "dean of the gun writers" in his day claimed the 45-70 was ideal. But he did most of his elk hunting while providing a railroad...

FBI Goes Back to 9mm While Military?...

FBI vs. military firearms The mission of one is arresting fugitives, the mission of the other is killing enemies.

    Hewes Craft...........Thoughts?

We spent five weeks in Alaska the summer before last. I saw very few Lunds (big boat tenders in Skagway), a few Crestliners (Valdez), but lots of Hewes and Bayliner boats. Much of this must be due to those brands being built in the Pacific NW, avoiding lots of freight costs. Yards in Seward...

    Handguns to hunt pheasants?

22 rimfire is actually legal in MN.

    Arrested

I doubt that verifying legality is as hard as we're told by employers. If the guy is illegal, he doesn't exist in the government system, therefore no taxes or Social Security withholding costs to the employer. Am I the only one who thinks the Chamber of Commerce lobby likes illegal workers?

    Odd fly fishing question

Yup, they are jigs with a more acceptable name. Just like strike indicators are bobbers with a nicer name. We fly fishermen are a sensitive lot, and don't like our no-end-to-it stuff to share a name with a lowly pan fisherman. By the way, weighted nymphs are an excellent bait/lure/fly for pan...

    Rock Tamers

There have been threads concerning boat protection at Walleye Central quite often. If you go with the rock barriers that hang below your bumper, it seems having them too close to the ground will cause more rocks to be thrown. The rock barrier that bolts to the front of the trailer is preferred.

    My 401k hurts

Unless you're already retired like I am, it's a good time to increase your contributions to your 401K. Buy low/sell high. Doing the reverse is folly.

Which New Truck Do I Need?

I learned a tip about longevity when in a campground south of Livingston, MT a few years ago. The "teacher" was a retired freight company owner. He referred to his 1T Dodge diesel dually as a pickup, not anywhere near a "real truck" in his experience. Since he had a 5th wheel camper and...

Which New Truck Do I Need?

My "newer" pickup is a 2009 Chevy 3500 crew dually with 6L gas engine. It carried my 11' (main floor length) Lance camper (weighs 4,000# with groceries, clothing, and bedding for two) nicely to Alaska and back two summers ago. Around the Dakotas and MN, it carries the camper and tows my 17...

    1911's

I own two Kimbers, but the sweetest 1911 I've ever handled was a Scandium-aluminum framed Smith & Wesson. It's trigger was better than the Colt National Match I had in college. But the new Smith cost double the price of a used Kimber.
