    I've used frozen suckers. I thought they would be better than smelt for sure, not even a hit. I have switched to smelt and done well in the same hole on the same day that suckers did nothing. Surprising and disappointing.

    Be careful with how fresh you are going or you might need to answer some questions as far as if they are dead enough to appease the game warden. Other than that 4"-7"in local caught bait should work great. I have some cut goldeye in my freezer I'm going to try if I get a chance to leave work one...

    I'm with ya Dean. I can't get a take on a herring to save my life while others swear by them. We also catch our fair share of suckers and throw them in the freezer. I thought that would be the hot bait. No dice. Smelt seems to be the only way to go.

    Judging by the auger in the background I'm assuming this guy may have been actively fishing. Kinda out of the norm over there, usually guys just head out to check tip-ups once or twice a day.
