    2020 Open Water - I'm Ready...Already

I think it was 2012 when we had a 50 degree day in January that I put the boat in the Missouri at Bismarck. February, I'm pretty sure I've fished Feb a few times since 2003, when I arrived in Bismarck. And...I'd like to do it again this year. Without a ton of snow west of the Missouri River...

    2020 Open Water - I'm Ready...Already

If you would like, I could park it out back on my pond so you can at least say it's been on the water this year. We could even punch a couple holes and lower a few jigs over the gunwales to see if any fish are still in the backyard.

20.1-05.1-02. Discretionary special allocation hunting license authorization

wjschmaltz could have stopped after that first sentence. That's enough for me. If you want to hunt elk in ND, apply for a cow tag, you won't have to wait long.

    Locking fish house

Yeah, there have been examples of meth cookers setting up a lab in fish houses. Warden or other law shows up, all you have to do is not let them in as you contaminate the lake with all kinds of nasty ass chems. I've not yet had a bad warden encounter while out icefishing, and I've been doing...

    Lake Tschida

Be careful on Tschida (or any western ND reservoir) for the next couple weeks. The warm weather we had a little while back has produced runoff and shorelines in particular may be a little iffy as incoming water rots the ice and rising water levels lifts the ice along the shore. In particular...

    anyone heating with coal?

You would have a very difficult time trying to get a water permit for an open style geothermal setup in ND. Or just about anywhere for that matter.

    Eurasian Collared Doves

Are you sure about that nowadays? I know at one point the NDGF thought of them as an invasive species, but nowadays I thought they lumped them in with Mourning Dove for limits, etc. All I know is I really hate the SOBs. Their call is akin to fingernails on a damn chalkboard. Right up there...

    Concrete home

I know a guy who built one a little over 10 years ago in the Bismarck area. It seemed like a more of a PITA, took longer, and more money, than was expected. Given the price of concrete nowadays, it's hard for me to imagine it being a good idea. And that's without even taking into account...

    anyone heating with coal?

Once you start digging down to 25 ft with a hoe, you've lost control of costs. Depending on the construction style of the building/home, you need someone familiar with geothermal systems to design how much "loop" you need for heat exchange with the ground. Putting loops on top of each other by...

Yeah, I can't comment on this artist's conception of heat exchange other than you're right, it looks goofy.

    anyone heating with coal?

Not sure I quite understand the question, the above schematic is for a "closed system" and with such I am not aware of a "release plume" of heat or other water quality concerns. There are other, mostly older systems, that simply pumped water up from depth and used it once before discharging it...
