    Got rain?

The afternoon has been good to us in the Bismarck area, still a light rain and I've now got 0.88" out by Lincoln.

    Got rain?

About a quarter of an inch here on the south side of Bismarck.

    Anyone see much of this?

I've caught pike that were blind in both eyes. Always figured someone used them as finger holds. They tended to be pretty skinny, but the sockets weren't filled in with bone.

    Bismarck Prop Works

I've had aluminum props repaired there in the past. They do good work. One thing I will note though is I lost about 200 rpm with each repair. This was on an aluminum 19P semi-cleaver prop, Yamaha factory version. I've not had to get a stainless repair yet, but do have a candidate for going...

    Mule Deer Hunt Planning

The meat just seemed really susceptible to spoiling quickly when thawing it before cooking. I have noticed this on an elk and a couple deer.

    Mule Deer Hunt Planning

Err, it has been raining in the southwest. I think it will take cooler temps. The cool season grasses won't take advantage of the recent rains when it's been 90 degrees.

    Dicamba Drift?

Sandy soil and tordon are a bad combo. Organic farmers are probably the most up in arms with their neighbors. You are talking serious problems if an organic farmer pops positive for an herbicide like this. I HATE leafy spurge!

    Mule Deer Hunt Planning

Skip the backpack for the deer unless you are really interested in quartering and deboning a deer in the Badlands. I have recovered probably 20 deer in the Badlands over the years and my favorite is the ugly green sled I bought in 2003. It alone has had a deer on it for more than 15 miles and...

    Dicamba Drift?

I have accidentally killed or set back a few trees of my own. 2-4D is plenty capable of putting the smack down on some trees. If only the weeds were as susceptible as my trees!

Twp and Range for Handheld GPS?

Several years ago I put section numbers into a GPS as waypoints at the center of the section. It worked well for knowing exactly which section I was in, etc. Even though I tried a few times, not even I could get lost by 6 miles. Tech has changed a lot over the past ten years though, so I...

    National Grasslands

Because we are talking about the LMNG here, and public lands rented out to ag interests in general. We disagree on the level of importance the competing interests should be given. I have been very disappointed in the past when making plans to recreate (hunt) a given area of public land only to...

Point is you were making snarky comments. So here's one for you. Outside of Antler, a stepfather and father-in-law usually are two different people. Lord, I apologize for that...and be with the little pygmies out in Africa.

    National Grasslands

Pics are representative of the entire pasture. I don't need to cherry pick the locations within the pasture. Besides, shouldn't the grazing be done at the proper level for each pasture and not lumped all together? I know we do that as there are differences between each pasture. Nice...

    deer rifle results are out

I started getting ready last year! Now if we can keep EHD from rearing it's ugly head. BTW, you will really like the muley I saw out there last year if he survived. While he belongs on MY wall, we'll have to see what we can do about getting you a shot at him, he's a real dandy buck.

    deer rifle results are out

Personally, I think the solution to the muzzy tag problem is to put the season back to what it was originally intended for, and that is a hunt using some form of yesteryear equipment. Whether that's blackpowder with either a flintlock, or cap and ball, is open for debate. BUT, the 200 yard...

    National Grasslands

Much like yourself, I grew up farming and ranching. While I haven't stayed quite as intimately in touch with it, my 80 yr old stepfather still runs cows and I help as I can. So while we are playing 20 questions, do you see anything below that resembles overgrazing to you? Just curious as I...

    Reloading = dumb

Now if only those Russian bastards would start realizing what they are missing out on by not using the 25-06 Remington and 7 mm Rem Mag rounds! - - - Updated - - - Note: I don't own a 223/5.56 or a 308. And if I did, I probably wouldn't reload for them either.

gst, You crack me up.And, I backtrack nothing. I said I don't see it nearly as much nowadays as I have in years past. You could take a little lesson in full disclosure.LMNG = Little Missouri National Grasslands bwah hah hah, you don't say

    National Grasslands

Yep, there certainly is a difference between grazing and overgrazing. I suspect you are misinterpreting something there with the intent of Sedevec's work. While the stubble requirement may be higher than some of the vegetation, it is certainly not higher than all of the vegetation. It is plant...

Actually, he and the federal employees of BLM, USFS, USACE, etc, etc that will listen are simply taking the work of range scientists such as Kevin Sedevec from NDSU and trying to implement the recommendations made in that paper I linked to a couple pages back. Then again, you read that paper as...
