I was at the VA today and saw an old man sitting in a wheelchair wearing a WWII hat. I walked over to shake his hand and wound up talking with him for about 20 minutes until they called him for his appointment. He was on Omaha Beach 72 years ago, not many of those guys left. It was an honor to spend a little time with him.

Question for those around Mind-rot. I understand, from a friend second-hand, that the Minot Daily News didn't have one iota of a story about D-Day this year???? The only reference to June 6th was the date on the front page headline and a Peanuts cartoon in the comic section.

Is that true? Minot Daily News hasn't responded to me yet.

In the past six months I've come across three men who were either on Omaha Beach or Normandy Beach. One of those guys' unit made it all the way to the Battle of the Bulge with Patton. The least I could do was salute each man and thank him for his heroic gesture.

I also met one man, recently, that was on one of the motherships to PT-109 in the south pacific. He told me a kamakazi pilot crashed into his ship and the explosion threw him from one side of the rear deck to the other, landing against the railing and injuring him where he couldn't use his legs to walk at the time. He then said, minutes later, another kamakazi pilot beat out the rain of bullets from the ships' guns and hit the other side of their ship. The captain orders "Abandon Ship".... men had just reached this guy and were helping him to shelter/infirmary when the order was given. They were told to swim the four miles to an island. Only 50 men make it to shore, some staying in the treeline along shore and another 27 going inward further for medical care inside an abandoned hutment.

Bill continued telling me the Japaneze bombed that island all night long. When he awoke he crawled outside to see the destruction. He went back inside to find the other 26 guys from one end of the hut to the other were dead. He was the only survivor in that hut. He crawled to the shore to his mates and they were rescued a few days later.

Lincoln, kinda...
While it didn't fully sink in at the time, I had an opportunity as a young kid to spend an afternoon with a doughboy. Wow...

Kind of like trying to find a WWII vet nowadays.

Several years ago I emceed an event that had a guest speaker from South Dakota named Jack van der Geest. The guy was born in the Netherlands and was one of 9(?) survivors/successful escapees from one of the worst concentration camps. He wrote a book titled Was God on Vacation, excellent short read.

What a man, what a life story!

Thats why they are the "greatest generation" Hard workers, strong christian beliefs and didnt rely on anyone else taking care of them or picking up their check. Truly loved our country and what it stands for. PTSD was not in their vocabulary. Thank You to all Vets! You guys are all heroes.

I also met Mr. Van der Geest here in Bismarck. I paid for him to come speak at our annual training workshop back in 2001. What a story! He signed his book for me, "Was God On Vacation". It's not written all that well, but the story itself is utter and complete amazement. He played 'dead' in a pile of Jews at Buchenwald, only to overtake a german soldier shooting into the pile to ensure everyone was dead (darkness of night) and put on the german's clothing to escape. To this day (he is now deceased) he still had the pair of the German soldier's boots that he wore as he escaped into the woods.
