Double clutching was the only way to downshift the old three on the trees from 2nd to 1st before synchros.
Grandpa's IH Scout had a 3-spd manual that didn't have synchros for 1st gear. 1st gear was so low that you only really needed it to get going from a dead stop.
Wasn't too big of a deal to learn how to get the RPM right for it to drop into 1st. Only really did that a few times just so I knew how to do it.
Other than getting going from a dead-stop, I'm about 50/50 on whether I use a clutch or not to run through gears of a manual.
